Filipinos make up an integral part of Canada. Filipino nurses were on the frontline in the battle against COVID-19 in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Filipino care workers show up day in and day out to take care of your families and children. You have Filipino co-workers at your office, the restaurant you work in, the airport, the neighborhood superstore, and the production line.

Look around you. Who are the Filipinos in your community? Did you ever wonder why they’re here, taking care of your kids, while leaving their own behind? What are the conditions in the Philippines that force 6,000 Filipinos to leave every day? Who are the forces producing these nearly unlivable conditions? What are the issues they face when they arrive in receiving countries like Canada? These are the questions that Filipino youth and workers, alongside international comrades and allies, will be tackling at the 3rd BAYAN Canada Congress happening on September 17-18, 2022 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

BAYAN Canada is an alliance of organizations representing different sectors of Filipinos in Canada: Anakbayan is the youth sector, Migrante is the workers’ sector, and GABRIELA is the women’s sector. BAYAN Canada has been around since September 2008, taking on a wide array of issues from human rights to cultural identity, health literacy to housing, immigration battles to discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities, and so much more. In addressing these issues, member organizations defend the rights of Filipinos in Canada while carrying on the long-lasting struggle for just peace and genuine democracy in the Philippines. The work done by BAYAN Canada and its member organizations are well-documented in various news outlets and social media platforms: https://linktr.ee/bayanto

The BAYAN Canada Congress brings together Filipino youth, workers, and women from all over Canada, including Toronto. The theme of this year’s Congress is: “Reject and Resist US-Marcos II Regime: Defend the Rights and Welfare of Filipinos in Canada, Continue the Legacy of People Power, and Struggle for Just and Lasting Peace and Democracy in the Philippines.” The Congress is the highest decision-making body of the BAYAN Canada alliance where members gather from all over Canada to discuss campaigns, improve their work, and elect a new set of officers. We are fundraising in an effort to ensure that member organizations, allied organizations, and all those interested in the struggle for human rights and genuine democracy in the Philippines have a chance to attend the Congress. At the end of the Congress, attendees will prepare a comprehensive report of the Congress proceedings, the decisions made, and the plan for action for implementing the solutions that were collectively agreed upon.

The total attendance of individuals going to the Congress is between 15-20 people from member and allied organizations, for which the estimated flight cost is about $300 round trip per person and accommodations for $150-200 per night (three days), amounting up to $500 per person. The total estimated cost we are fundraising for the attendees of the Congress is $10,000. After the Congress, budget reports will be shared with all those who donated and provided their email contact in order to ensure full transparency and accountability.

Look around you. Who are the Filipinos in your community? What do you know about the lives they lead? What do you know about the issues they face and the sacrifices they make? How are these issues similar to the issues you’ve faced? How can you help? You can start here.
