Hello!

My name is Aimee. I am a young aspiring scientist, passionate about the environment and concerned about the current state of our planet. I have been lucky enough to be selected as 1 of 42* female scientists from around the world to represent Australia on an expedition to Antarctica in December 2016 with Homeward Bound! I am currently in my last year of a Bachelor of Science at the University of Tasmania. I aim to use my scientific training and knowledge to help protect and conserve our environment.

The expedition will leave from Hobart* and travel by boat to Antarctica. On the voyage we will be educated and trained in leadership practice, the challenges in polar science and related issues on climate change, and plan for constructive change upon return from the trip. Homeward Bound aims to elevate the role of women in leadership globally, demonstrate how polar science tells us what is happening to the planet and explore how women at the leadership table might give us a more sustainable future.

Dattner Grant is the driver of Homeward Bound, and the expedition is supported by a large, diverse and talented team including Greg Mortimer (voyage leader), Meredith Nash (lead researcher, UTAS), Melinda Truesdale (voyage medic), Mary-Anne Lea (Women in Polar Science and UTAS), Justine Shaw (Women in Polar Science and Australian Antarctic Division) and Renuka Badhe (Women in Polar Science and European Polar Board). We will receive instruction from a globally renowned faculty including Dr Jane Goodall, Franny Armstrong, Clare Bowditch and Dr David Kaplan. The expedition has been endorsed by the Australian Antarctic Division and the Governor of Tasmania, Professor Kate Warner, is a patron for the project. Excitingly a documentary based on this trip is also being made by Australian filmmakers, Bunya Productions.

This is where I need your help! This trip will be life changing and the experience and skills that I will gain will help me to pursue my passion for science and become a leading contributor to solutions to our current environmental crisis.

I hope you can help me realise this wonderful opportunity! As part of my commitment to Homeward Bound I have pledged to raise $15,000 in contribution towards the expedition.

Any generous contributions to helping me reach my fundraising goal would be greatly appreciated!

If you have any suggestions or would like further information please don’t hesitate to contact me at: [email protected].

Yours sincerely, Aimee : )

For more information about the expedition: http://homewardboundprojects.com.au or my website http://aimeebliss.weebly.com. Or check out my application video by clicking on the youtube link above.

*Recent changes to our departure location which is now Ushuaia, South America, and access to a bigger boat means a greater capacity and therefore space for more amazing female scientists aboard, so after a second round of applications we will be 78 in total!

Rewards

Thanks so much! When I return I would like to thank you with a personal Antarctic photo from my trip, hopefully featuring icebergs, beautiful landscapes or penguins!

Wow! To thank you for your generosity on my return you will receive an Antarctic photo and a small piece of Antarctic inspired art work, by me!

You are amazing! I would love to come and present to your work place or school after the trip, to share my experience and all that I have learnt! Plus a photo and a piece of art!

http://www.smh.com.au/national/improving-the-climate-for-women-20151211-gllbdk.htmlA great article in The Sydney Morning Herald highlighting the impact climate change is having directly on women and how Homeward Bound's purpose - to end gender equality in leadership positions is needed now more than ever!
