The Community Rights Movement

"It is the movement that environmental, civil rights, and labor activists have been looking for – one that liberates communities across the country from being at the mercy of corporate “rights” and governmental powers exercised by those corporations. The time has come to free ourselves from those constraints and become self-governing in the name of economic and environmental sustainability."

Thomas Linzey,

Executive Director, CELDF

Industry Quote on Community Rights

Community Rights is “…the beginning of a social movement that is greater than just the oil and gas industry, it is a potential game changer for all of corporate America”.

New Mexico Independent Petroleum Association

Driving change from the grassroots to the state and federal level

Some have described Community Rights as the next big social movement – one which “occupies the law” by turning local lawmaking into a vehicle of social change. A movement engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience against a governmental system which increasingly cannot be distinguished from our economic system – a system in which most of us lose, and only a very few ever win.

In places where a critical mass of these laws have been adopted, people are now gathering across different issues to launch state organizations focused on creating this new system through state constitutions, and eventually, through the federal constitution.

National Community Rights Network (NCRN)

We are NCRN, a non-profit organization. Our members represent Community Rights Networks from the states of Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. We are committed to providing education, outreach, and support for the development of statewide Community Rights Networks. We partner with Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) and state and local Community Rights advocates to build a grassroots, people-driven, Community Rights Movement that will democratize and humanize decision-making at all levels.

NCRN Mission

Assisting our state Community Rights Networks to educate people across the country on local, community self-governance and community rights; secure the inalienable rights of all people, communities, and ecosystems through local self governance; assert community rights to empower and liberate communities from state preemption and corporate harm; and advance those efforts toward state and federal constitutional change.

Help Fund the Annual NCRN Retreat

NCRN is holding our annual in-person board of directors meeting/retreat this October 21-23, 2016. Although NCRN board members from across the nation conduct monthly organizational meetings via conference calls, we believe that holding an annual in-person meeting is vital for creating the synergy we need to continue our work throughout the upcoming year. It gives each one of us a chance to personally review and sign projects we’ve collaborated on writing this past year including changes to the By-Laws and an endorsement policy to support local community rights-based efforts through state and national networking and publicizing. We will discuss committee work such as the NCRN Communications Committee and the NCRN Education Committee. We will also be conducting our monthly organizational meeting; learning exciting new ideas for advancing our work from guest speakers; and holding dynamic workshop/break-out sessions.

While some of the expenses will be paid by individual representatives, it’s impossible to cover all of the costs in this way. So we are seeking additional funding and we’d like your help. Please donate and help us reach our fundraising goal of $3,000. It’s quick and easy!

  • Go Community Rights!! And thank you for your work. The place where my family and I live in NW Ohio badly needs Democracy to be legalized. Our water sources are being poisoned by factory farms and FIVE mega pipeline projects are trying to come through. That's why we are working hard with your Ohio Community Rights Network to change our local laws to allow communities to say NO to corporate harm.
