My name is Batagenda Ben, a Ugandan by nationality, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, currently seeking asylum in a country where I will not have to live in constant fear for my life. I am currently living in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. Many of you might be aware of the barbaric homophobic laws promulgated by the Ugandan parliament several years ago, which criminalize gay sex, and mandate very long prison sentences, up to life, for anyone caught in a compromising situation, or even suspected of being gay, or a member of any other sexual minority. Kenya isn’t much better, and I was recently brutally beaten in a gay-bashing incident after leaving a club with a group of friends. I had to have extensive dental work done to repair the damage, as I had several teeth knocked out.

I fled to this camp in 2021 after my partner’s father discovered that I was involved in a romantic relationship with his son. This transpired during the covid-19 pandemic, when his father was abroad, and unable to return because of restrictions which had been placed upon entry and reentry into Uganda. Upon returning after the restrictions were lifted, he viewed camera footage of us from surveillance cameras he had placed throughout his house

When he found out about our relationship, he tortured my partner, and subsequently went to my parents' home nearby. He demanded that they turn me over to him, and swore that he would do whatever he could to locate me. This was a shock to them, not so much because he threatened me, but because they’d never known that I am gay. Rather than offering me any support, they told me that I was a disgrace to my family, and had ruined their reputation. Essentially, they have disowned me.

Following all those accusations and insults, I had no option but to leave the country. Since I fled Uganda, there has been no communication with my family, which is why I am here, trying to forge a path to a new life somewhere else.

With your help, I have hopes of creating that new life. Therefore, I humbly request empathetic people and well-wishers to donate something that will enable me to feed myself, since the UNHCR allows only 2 kg of grains and 1 liter of cooking oil, plus $8.00 per month, which isn’t even enough for two weeks. Clothing myself, and finding appropriate toiletries is also a challenge due to the harsh climate in the camp, which is semi-arid, almost a desert. The IRC tries to provide necessary medication, but the camp has almost no professional medical staff. What there is in terms of healthcare is provided by poorly trained volunteers. My makeshift home is made of tin, and becomes unbearably hot. I can alleviate this by adding plywood, which will make it a bit cooler. There is no electricity anywhere in the camp, so I hope to buy some solar panels so that I might have lights around my home in order to keep homophobic people away at night. I also need electricity to keep my phone charged. Our phones need to be functional at all times to allow for easy communication between the UNHCR and friends, and for security purposes as well.

Dear friends and people of good will, if you feel that, because of your own circumstances, you might not be able to help enough to make s difference, please realize that European, Canadian and American currencies in Kenya can buy many times over what they can buy in your home countries. There are many problems and much agony in this place; but if you can lend a hand to help me improve my living conditions here, I am sure I will be able to push on until God answers my prayers, allowing me to resettle somewhere where I can live a dignified life in pursuit of my dreams. God bless you.

Sincerely,

Batagenda Ben
