Support Bamboo School students this Christmas

This year myself and a few colleagues will be visiting a small school in Kanchanaburi Thailand, 300 meters from the boarder of Myanmar. The students attending this school are mainly children of Burmese migrant workers who cross the border into Thailand each day. The families work on rubber plantations or construction sites for very little financial return, usually around 50$ a month.

The La Salle foundation supports the work of the Bamboo School, which is a primary school for the education of stateless children. (Stateless children lack citizenship: they fail to be officially recognized by either Myanmar or Thailand.)

The children are taught academic fundamentals as well as the Thai language. Upon graduation, the students receive public documentation which is formally recognized by the government, thus allowing them to attend public middle and high school in Thailand.

The Bamboo School enables otherwise stateless and marginalized children to be assimilated into the public educational system. In doing so, the children break out of the poverty into which they were born: their education makes them strong candidates for employment.

In the evenings, the Bamboo School provides basic life-skills and language training for adults.

Contributions to this will provide daily-use educational materials, lunch for the children, and resource materials for the school.
