I Mostafa Rajabi am an artist from Iran and a political refugee in Greece. I used to sustain myself and my daughter in Iran by selling my paintings until the COVID-19 breakout. It is indeed challenging to practice my art in Greece.

Shorthand

This collection consists of more than 30 paintings. Landscapes of beach and sea which are generally imaginary along with human bodies by the shore or in water. The importance of these paintings is the unusual relationship between human and sea. This action is a depiction of Iranian contemporary history. The paintings performed so far are in a small dimension but the rest must have a bigger dimension so I can depict the endless glory of the sea.

Imagine a delightful day on the beach; enjoying the warmth of the sands with soles of the feet and staring at the spectacular view of the endless sea then, you take a moment to go and swim feeling the sea with every single part of your body and after dunking your head under the water and coming back up everything is blurred and turned grey. All of a sudden not is the same as before there is no charming beauty and all there is the insecure, grey image which is nothing but a dreadful reflection of memories brought by a ghost and no longer you can get your head underwater. Everything has turned dull with an accompanying fear.(The original script is in Persian; this is just a quote!)

  • In following what has been discussed so far was a metaphor of feelings I have experienced in my life often.

The pain of invoked old scars which I believe is the historical connection of me and people of Iran.

a common feeling in between contemporaries of this land.

an agony which hits us even at our best moments; instantly.

My effort on these canvases glancing through an unambiguous and turbulent of the contemporary history of Iran.

Bitter incidents which collapse over people's head even at the sweetest moments.

The colours in the paintings are clear and unpretentious and all about the glory and beauty of sea, beach and human's body.

But the ambiguity of the elements of the paintings is what makes humans present unpleasant.

I am striving to reach a conversion of the relation between the human's body and the sea.

there is no joy here. The sea does not create a joyful moment and it is only the habitat of these humans nothing but mysterious and misleading

stares lack expression and mouths open without a word.

Sea doesn't resemble water; the sea is just the sea. The true definition of the sea, not the water substantially. The material turns into a meaning which I exempt form definition and the word 'sea' is transformed into a painting. So the human presence within forms "nothingness".

  • Paintings that have been done so far almost all are small components

designs and pre-designs and some serious pieces but what I have in mind is something that needs to take place. Depicted glory of the sea on big canvases.

Eyes are caught by overcoming stun coming from this infinite glory.

By fleeing this intense unbelievable mass the only remaining way is hitting the water ( bathing).

The joy of swimming is the rejoicing escape. Therefore my paintings must expand all over the walls to cause the viewer a stunning flee and since they can't enter the piece they will drown inside

encrypted human shapes.

  • The past two years passed with a delusive hope that I would cover the expenses of this collection; led to the creation of several small paintings. The time has come to face the reality of need.
