My name is Leah Propst. I am a recent graduate from Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA, where I majored in Political Science. I am passionate about social change, and dedicated to my community.
I live in a small borough in southwestern PA called Ambridge (population: 7,000). After researching voting statistics for the borough, I found that voter turnout is quite low. There also seems to be a deep sense of voter apathy. I also found that, although the population here is about 51% female, members of Council and public boards are 80% male. I decided that the best course of action would be to start a get-out-the-vote campaign geared specifically toward residents of Ambridge.
My campaign is called Ambridge Votes. The goal of Ambridge Votes is to maximize representation in government by informing and assisting the public in the voting process. By facilitating voter enthusiasm and participation, I hope to attain equal, adequate representation in governing institutions at the local, state, and federal level.
I have started a website (ambridgevotes.wixsite.com/vote), a Facebook page and group, and a Twitter account. I have also been featured on a local news website, Ambridge Connection. I have held two voter registration events in town, where I dispersed voter registration applications, candidate lists, and other voter information.
I am glad to provide this service to my community, but unfortunately it is not free. In order to continue, I need to be able to purchase supplies for my voter registration tables, printouts, posters, gas for travelling, and other assorted expenses. I would also like to have a real domain, instead of the free website I am currently using.
