I have known Aiyana, 15 (Year 10), since she was a toddler when her dad, Joel and my husband, Joselin, became workmates in 2005. From that moment on, Joel has always looked after us in many practical ways especially with all things technical like setting up emails and general maintenance of a computer. He is also like our personal handyman, painter, electrician and carpenter. This man of many gifts never shied away from sharing them with Joselin and I, and to many of their friends. Joel is the son we never had, having two daughters, both of whom live very far away.

Despite having what most would call a "big" family in this time and age, having five children himself, Joel always had time for us. In fact, even through Aiyana's ordeal, which started in July last year, he was unfailing in his love and care for us, particularly when my husband and I were injured in a physically and emotionally traumatic car accident in September. He did the same when their older daughter, Ariadne fought with cancer a few years back.

How we wish we can be of more support to Joel, Andrea and their five children through this very difficult time! Unfortunately, as retirees with our own health battles to fight and the physical distance between us (an hour's drive), we have decided to turn to other generous and beautiful souls out there who might be able to financially help this resilient and amazing family.

Joel has exhausted all his long-service leave and has repeatedly gone on leave without pay when Aiyana went through her chemotherapy last year and radiotherapy earlier this year. Andrea practically lived in the hospital with Aiyana during these times due to her body's reaction to the treatments. Joel held the fort at home and managed the household, with support from friends who brought them groceries and cooked some meals for them. They are blessed with good friends and a school community who have all helped in prayer and in many practical ways but the reality is, THE BILLS ARE MOUNTING and their savings have been depleted.

And now, the family has just found out that THE CANCER IS BACK. There are scar tissues in her chest which makes it difficult and painful for Aiyana to breathe. She has developed a fever and is back in hospital, while they are waiting for the next course of action. Surgery is out of the question, so is radiotherapy but Chemotherapy again is on the table. Andrea is back in hospital caring for Aiyana and Joel has to stay at home again, on leave without pay.

They would not dream of asking money from all their families and friends who have already been generous to them.

So, I turn to you, my dear reader...

- You may be one of the unselfish souls who have already helped the family. In that case, please send this this campaign around to other unselfish people you know.

- You may be an acquaintance who didn't know much about the family's plight but you are in a position to help. The family will greatly appreciate anything you can share.

- You may be a stranger who received this from another caring soul. Do consider if you would be able to help a genuine family in need. I cannot think of a family more deserving of your generosity!

May you be blessed for your kindness!

Aiyana's Wish Has Come True

Update posted by Ruby and Joselin Gorospe at 11:55 am

When you ask an average 15 year old what they wish for, they might rattle off the usual things: the latest iPhone or gadget, the name brand bag/shoes/outfit; if you're lucky, they might name something more "meaningful" such as a special holiday with family/friends. Well, that's not our Aiyana...that's because. . . . .

Aiyana’s Continuing Miracle

Update posted by Ruby and Joselin Gorospe at 08:46 pm

With every surgeon’s visit in the mornings since Sunday, the family have been told how surprised and impressed the medical staff are with Aiyana’s recovery from the emergency brain surgery she had on Friday. Apparently, it normally takes weeks to recover and for Aiyana to be able to move her. . . . .

Aiyana had an emergency surgery yesterday

Update posted by Ruby and Joselin Gorospe at 04:17 am

My apologies for this late update. After she had her infection, Aiyana was able to commence her second round of chemo. Unfortunately, it was making her so tired that they had to cease chemo. She has been in hospital since, working on decreasing her pain medication, even going to hydrotherapy.. . . . .
