The Shift is the only newsroom that consistently turned down funds from developers wanting to silence criticism of a controversial project. You will be hearing a lot about the Villa Rosa development, but we’re the only ones that can give you the peace of mind that we will report without fear or favour.

We do this because we will always keep our word that you, our readers, come first. We do this because you have always backed us up through your following and direct contributions, whenever we called for support. It’s not easy to say no to hundreds of thousands of euros, but we know that if we reach out to you, you will have our back. So please keep actively supporting our work.

In return, we will continue to always make sure that we work in the public interest, and nobody else’s.

There has never been a more pressing time for independent, investigative journalism that empowers readers with what they need to make informed choices and hold power to account, but our work depends on your support.

With Malta's rampant overdevelopment threatening diminishing green spaces, we want the freedom to choose how to report on this project without any doubts about our independence. We work hard to build and maintain our readers' trust and are always determined to safeguard it.

And we have been consistently able to do this even as the newsroom battles 40 different legal challenges that the government has launched against Freedom of Information requests. The Shift has been fighting these for two years and winning every case to defend your right to know.

We are immensely proud of everything we have achieved in just six years of The Shift's existence. We don't measure impact by the number of clicks. We measure it by the actions that follow. Our reporting has led to investigations by the police, National Audit Office (NAO), Commissioner of Standards in Public Life, and the European Commission. We owe this success to the support of our readers.

Our rapidly growing community of supporters proves that another way for independent public interest journalism is possible. Possible and noticeable. Our reader-supported journalism has received accolade after accolade, and international bodies continue to endorse our investigative work.

Your trust in our work means that this small newsroom needs to grow, and the summer is shaping up to be busy with more we're planning to investigate, expose and report.

Please support our work. The support we receive will ensure that we keep that "game-changing" journalism going. For you.
