Sudanese Revolution: Deja Vu

Assalamualaikum (Peace be Unto You),

For my birthday, I wanted to raise money for a charity that moved me. Two months ago, I had picked Children's Miracle Network (medicine + children, essential components that will pave the path for our future). This charity caught my attention because I saw the word ‘Miracle’, and it drew my attention (+ after much conducted research, it was shown that proceeds were being allocated in a sufficient manner i.e. the calculations for program expenses, administrative expenses, fundraising expenses, etc. were broken down eloquently). Miracle. Something so pretty and commanding about that word. It sparkles, it even begs hope. And hope for me is broken into two actions: ‘desire + confidence’. Which can be breathtaking when they’re combined and that’s why we all cling onto hope so much, it radiates, it forces us to move forward, to try.. even when we don't know where we're going. And that for me is the basic characteristics of a human: constantly striving with a purpose in mind. And with the on-going events occurring right now, we need to hold hope in our hearts that Sudan will come to a more peaceful resolution, we need to be present and aware for them. Even when terrible, atrocities, despicable crimes are committed, we need to be aware enough to look around and see how much it brings everyone together to help piece the broken parts together. And what more could we hope for?

What is Sudan's current state of affair?

The country has been protesting for months due to the fact that their leader Omar al-Bashir (President of Sudan since 1989 to 2019 -- in power for 30 years) & the government started to make cuts to bread and fuel, increasing prices of food and goods, etc.

This caused for the civilians to revolt, and it spread to the capital, Khartoum. Though the protests started due to the cuts being made, it turned into protests to remove Bashir and the government that was in place, and put in place a fair civilian government. In April, the demonstrators demanded that the army force Bashir to leave, and a few days later, flood of people of all ages came together to celebrate one thing - freedom.

Sudan would be controlled by a military council and they would come to the consensus for a three year period to allow the country to come under civilian rule.

This wouldn't last long. Monday, June 3 - Massacre in Khartoum, where innocent protestors would be shot outside the military's headquarter. This occurred along with other Sudanese cities which feels like deja vu. Time and time again, we've seen "tyrants bound on keeping power at any costs taking countless lives in the same exact brutal manner in plain sight of the international community." Along with this, the British Ambassador has said that this new election will pave the way for much of the old regime to come back into power.

We need to be a voice so we can raise awareness and provide them with the necessities to heal from this disaster.
