WHY?

**We take it for granted – they have to fight for it**

Since June 2019, Hong Kong has become the epicentre in the struggle for democracy. It all started with a protest against the proposed extradition bill to China, which threatened the autonomy of Hong Kong. Ever since then, these protests developed into a greater cause in fighting for the values of freedom, human rights and democracy. Despite desperate attempts by the Hong Kong and Chinese government to suppress the protests (e.g. arresting more than 2400 protesters, 1/3 of them underage), the citizens, and especially the students continuously take to the streets for their beliefs. In order to create a democratic symbol for the protesters to unite behind, a group of art and design enthusiasts founded the “Lady Liberty Project” in August this year. Through crowdfunding donations were raised from HongKongers, and the “Lady Liberty of Hong Kong” was built within a week. It was unveiled at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and, subsequently, taken to the protests, where the crowds erupted in cheers seeing the statue. Finally, it was installed on the iconic Lions Rock to guard over the city.

目的？

2019年6月後香港成為民主抗爭的主戰場。
引發點是香港政府提出威脅一國兩制的"送中條例"，自此，逆權運動進化成對自由，人權及民主的更堅定的抗爭。
新聞自由及集會表達自由不斷受到香港政府及香港警察箝荆。
民主抗爭面對警察暴力，拘捕超過2400人，其中三分一更是未成年。

為了表達對前線抗爭的支持，今年八月一羣藝術家通過綱上眾籌製作了"香港民主女神"(六小時内便眾籌達標)，最先把香港民主女神放在香港中文大學，然後在各次遊行中出現，都能給示威者莫大支持。最後香港民主女神安放在最娟香港象徵意義的獅子山頂。可惜最後香港民主女神像受到惡意破壞。

The IDEA

**We take it for granted – they have to fight for it. Let us show our fellow students our support in their struggle for human rights and democracy**

We want an international show of solidarity for the students and people of Hong Kong. Therefore, the aim is to create a Lady Liberty 2.0, this time crowdfunded by students all around the world. Subsequently, it will be built here in Hong Kong by a collective effort of local students, exchange students, and the organizers of the first Lady Liberty Project. The statue will be exhibited at a University of Hong Kong as well as be taken to the demonstrations, showing the protesters: You are not alone, we stand with you! Furthermore, by contributing to the construction of the statue, by having an object of your creation in the protests, you will be right there shoulder to shoulder with the protesters even if you are on the other side of the world. So wherever you live on the planet, if you want to show solidarity with your fellow Hong Kong students and all the Hong Kong protesters, help us to make “HK’s Global Lady Liberty” happen.

What's the plan?

The team behind the original Lady Liberty Hong Kong will collaborate with a team of local / international university students to create an evolved, and more modest version of Lady Liberty HK that reflects the international perspective and prospects that the project can potentially yield. With the need of mobility in mind, the completed statue will be exhibited at a University Campus of HK but will also be present at democratic rallies with the help of students and fellow passionate citizens.

This project also aims to serve as a "template project" that encourages other international communities to build their own version of Lady Liberty HK, not only for the cause of HK, but for every group that faces political oppression. The design and production detail will be completely opensourced and can be easily modified and reproduced.

The Design

"HK's Global Lady Liberty" will resemble the design of the original "Lady Liberty of Hong Kong", but will have different features signifying the international support behind it. It will be life-size statue (2m) and stand on a globe, representing its international base of supporters. The painting on the statue's flag will show the Hong Kong Flag surround by all the flags of our donors. So make sure your country is on it by donating, and stating your country of origin in the description.
