Student Run Animal Sanctuary in Puerto Rico

Hello, My name is Victor Eduardo Trejo, Im a 22 years old veterinarian student who recently moved to the island of Puerto Rico To help save Lives. Originally from Chicago I came here on vacation & ended up staying after viewing the horrific conditions of the animals roaming the streets & rescuing 13 dogs in just a matter of days . Were talking hundreds of thousands of animals; primarily cats, dogs( 'satos') & horses littering the streets.. Broken limbs, starving, covered with Mange, pregnant, puppies dead on the side of the road & living out of trash, drinking from oil puddles! Ive been here Since January of 2013 & since then have founded the non-profit organization ' StoptheSuffering.Ethics', immediately i began recruiting fellow students, locals & raising awareness. Everyday We work extremely hard to pull these creatures off these streets & rehabilitate them before finding them their forever homes. Currently I have a location/sanctuary here in Juana Diaz PR where I solely care for over 40 rescued animals on my acre of land. At one point I had up to 72 by myself but due to Sicknesses such as Parvo & distemper. My death Toll quickly began to Escalate. Were slowly but surely starting to grow, more and more volunteers have been coming but it is still simply not enough to make the necessary impact & provide all the attention these animals deserve. We are in desperate need of vaccines, fencing, funding for our sanctuaries utility bills, rent, dog food, bleach, real signs & other misc expenses. Nearly everyday we go to the street lights with flimsy home made signs but its still not enough... Unfortunately the Island has no efficient animal Rescue / control systems put Into place & the authorities don't seem to care. These animals are suffering! Hit by cars and left with broken limbs or backs! Paralyzed. Starving! Covered with mange, fleas & ticks! Intestinal worms from eating garbage & drinking out of oil puddles! Bloody paws from roaming the streets on scoarching hot pavement all day!! It's up to organizations like ours to rescue these animals. Rehabilitate them, sterilize them vaccinate them & find them forever homes. As a student body, we've managed to accomplish a lot. From food donations, getting dogs adopted, community support/awareness, renting a facility with a nice sized yard to house all these animals. But all of this costs money & our bills are beginning to surpass what we're able to raise... But what we really need now is more kennels & to fix some rough spots along our perimeter fencing.
