Other than a dog house, the most crucial thing an outside dog needs to survive during winter is straw. Straw can be the difference between life and death during brutal cold weather as it is an excellent moisture resistant insulator. A dog house is a great start and can also be the difference between life and death, however with as cold as it gets in winter during Michigan, a dog can still freeze to death in a dog house that does not have any/enough straw. During the cold months, we host monthly winter outreaches. Our #1 mission during winter outreach? To provide straw to as many dogs as possible. We CANNOT let those dogs freeze to death! On one weekend a month, we round up our volunteers, supplies, and pick-up trucks and divide up into teams. We print out a list of all of our program dogs that are currently enduing winter stuck at the end of a chain and divide up the dogs among the teams. Each team fills up their truck with as much straw, high protein food, and big bones, and off we go to spread our love all throughout Southwest Detroit and Downriver! On these days, we reach up to 200+ chained/outside dogs in a just a few hours. We also set up a straw tent in Southwest Detroit for owners to come pick up straw on their own. We go through 250-300 bales of straw on each outreach day!! On top of our monthly winter outreaches, during winter we have volunteers in the field just about every weekend! Our teams ROCK! They are the very best!! Our volunteers are constantly tackling new assessments and revisiting the dogs that need more than one visit a month. Winter is our toughest and busiest time with it being so brutally cold and hard on the dogs that do not get to come inside and warm up. Please consider helping us, help them, during the months of December through February. These months cost us approximately $25,000 just to operate and provide everything that we would like to provide for the dogs. Winter is when we need YOU the most!! Please consider helping the Chained & 24/7 outside dogs of Detroit! We are 100% volunteer based and operate solely on 100% donations!! Spread your love HERE!! The CHAINED doggies deserve it most!! They are not only freezing, but they have been robbed of their American Freedom!! Thank you in advance!!!! We appriciate and love each & every one of you that help our babies!!

  • You do good work! You got the owner to surrender a small 8 year old red pit bull mix (then named Barrack). Here is his photo now. He now lives the cushy life with us and his fur-sister.
