I am a 21 year old, BEd student, suffering from strabismus (exotropia) and amblyopia. I have had this condition since i was young and at home we never took it really seriously till we realised that my vision was getting extremely bad. Basically strabismus is a failure of the two eyes to maintain proper alignment and work together as a team. With strabismus, one eye looks directly at the object you are viewing, while the other eye is misaligned, and in my condition, outward ( "wall-eyed"), My exotropia has lead to amblyopia, which leads to my one eye being smaller than the other.
Growing up i suffered from a lot of bullying due to my condition,i had assumed that as years went by I would get used to the jokes and eventually become immune to it, however the lack of confidence within myself and the subliminal bullying persists. This has really impacted my self-esteem and with that being said I suffer to make eye contact. Since i am studying education we are always told about the importance of eye contact, however that is one of my biggest insecurities.
Further more, this does not only affect my self perception but my vision too, I lack 3D perception and I suffer from double vision. I have been wearing glasses since I was young and they have not offered much help in regards to my condition.
Therefore I have started this campaign in hopes to raise enough money to get a corrective surgical procedure done, the procedure including all the consultation costs would sum up to the amount of R30,000.
My mother is a single parent and would not be able to cover all the costs for this procedure on her own hence I am seeking for help.
