Meet the two newest recruits to join Storybook farm. I can see mischief in those eyes, I think they are going to keep the SBF team on their toes!!

…………………………...

Romeo oh Romeo....

Whew what an intensely busy few days!
We received an urgent message about a dear little dog who had recently gone down with Intervertebral Disc Disease - IVDD.

...

There is a common misconception that IVDD is solely a dachshund condition but it is actually found in many breeds.

Romeo is a 6 yr old purebred Maltese terrier , he arrived in not great shape.
He had been paralysed for the past 4 weeks, the expensive surgery was not an option and his owners were not advised to crate him so Romeo had been dragging himself about the house and consequently had developed some very nasty sores on his back paws plus he was on the incorrect medication so he was still in considerable pain.
His lovely family were at their wits end by the time they reached out to us and had tried their best but simply were given incorrect or rather incomplete advice.
It was a heartbreaking decision for them to surrender Romeo to us but with full time jobs and a young family they felt unable to care for a now permanently disabled dog.

Our first step was to get his pain under control so an urgent call to our wonderful vet Dr Steven Tanner soon had that sorted and Alexandria (who is incredibly well versed after all these years in treating wounds ) so within an hour of arrival little Romeo was a great deal more comfortable with much stronger meds, washed/treated bandaged paws and a meal of bbq chicken he happily snuggled down and promptly slept through until the next morning!

Two days after arrival Romeo developed neuropathic pain ( best described as strong pins and needles type pain) in his tail , this is not uncommon in paralysed animals so another urgent trip to the vet this time for surgery to have his tail amputated.

Romeo has now been with us a week and you can clearly see the improvement in him by the photos I took today of him shopping with his new best mate Frank.

He is no longer in pain, his paws have healed beautifully , his sutures come out in another week and best of all he is smiling again.

Romeo may be permanently paralysed but around here we dont consider that a problem , we know just how cool wheels are ....

Dont we....😉

Welcome home Romeo...

From my heart to yours
