15 million game birds a year are brought into the UK from France, over 5 million as day old chicks the rest as "hatching eggs".
After learning that Eurotunnel was the last remaining transporter of day old chicks, we travelled to France with the Hunt Saboteurs Association to film the conditions on farms, what we found was shocking, every farm we found listed when viewed via sattelite was clearly a battery farm.
Every farm we went too was row upon row of tiny barren cages, these birds can never fly, they are inprisoned for life, so that their eggs can be collected and sent on to England. Each egg is worth about 40p and each bird will lay between 50-60 eggs during the season, after which it will be killed.
We have the potential to now not only put an end to the transport of day old chicks, but more crucially put an end to the importation of hatching eggs. P&O have already committed to never carry chicks or hatching eggs for the game industry, Brittany Ferries and DFDS have only commited to not carrying day old chicks.
Our plan is simple, print thousands of leaflets, make a banner, hire or buy a couple of "chick" costumes, then travel on Eurotunnel and the ferries and hand out the leaflets and take photos for press with the banner. If these tactics don't work, we'll look to upping the ante with lock on's or super gluing ourselves onto their property.
These companies may well already be in the process of deciding to never transport chicks or eggs, we want that process to happen as soon as possible, if you can please spend a couple of minutes emailing the bosses of Brittany ferries, DFDS & Eurotunnel, simply copy and paste their addresses and then send them your message OR use our template email.
As you will already know, your company is being used by game farmers in France to transport hatching eggs and/or day old chicks into the UK. The conditions on these farms is below the already incredibly low standards set out in England.
I ask you to follow P&O's example and immediately halt all transport of this kind.
I eagerly await your reply
We need funding to get leaflets printed as a matter of urgency, April-June is when the vast majority of chicks and eggs are exported. We also want to start booking ferries and trips on eurotunnel as soon as possible, that all costs money. Our fundraiser is set so that a minimum donation of £1 will be accepted. We appreciate not everyone has spare money at the moment, please if you have the time do send the email to the CEO's
