STOP THE CYDNA RUBBISH DUMP
A HUGE rubbish dump is headed our way! The Johannesburg City Council and Pikitup have embarked on a project to consolidate and centralize the municipal RUBBISH DUMP for a large portion of Johannesburg known as Region E (which stretches from Killarney though Alexandra and as far as Fourways) at the green belt Cydna site located in the Ethel Gray Park on the border of Abbotsford, Oaklands, Houghton, Atholl, Melrose and Birdhaven. The plan is to close the current dumps at Patterson Park in Norwood and the small dump in Melrose Street Birdhaven and to consolidate these into a MEGA DUMP. The proposed site is close to the Great Park Shul, a school, a number of residential complexes, an art centre and businesses. A dump of this scale and type will inevitably result in NOISE pollution, bad SMELLS, rats and VERMIN, an INFLUX of PEOPLE such as recyclers and scrap collectors into the surrounding areas, increase in TRAFFIC and PROPERTY DEVALUATION. The community needs to work together to pressurize the City Council into having the mega dump built elsewhere: in an industrial area (such as Wynburg), far away from a residential area.
The community has been lobbying the City, but the project seems to be rushing ahead (ground has been dug up at the exisiting dump in Norwood). We need to urgently engage lawyers and environmental experts to help prevent the implementation of this project.
We need your donation towards covering the fees of the community's lawyers and advisers.
