Campaign Story
Right now, as we speak, a brutal campaign against LGBTQ+ people is sweeping through Chechnya, a region in southern Russia. Gay men are being held in secret detention centres, where they are being electrocuted and beaten. Many have been turned over to the authorities members of their own family. These are the first alleged concentration camps for LGBTQ+ people since the Holocaust.
Rainbow Railroad is a Toronto-based charity that focuses on helping LGBTQ+
people escape persecution and violence by providing direct travel assistance
where needed. Rainbow Railroad is the only organization in the world providing
this direct assistance.
Since April, when the allegations first surfaced, Rainbow Railroad have helped
35 LGBTQ+ individuals escape from Chechnya, 31 of whom have now arrived safely
in Canada. Reports suggest that there remain at least 40 more Chechens who
continue to reside in safe houses waiting to leave Russia.
After learning about this ongoing atrocity during a course at St. Francis Xavier University I was motivated to 'do something' and to not just turn a blind eye. I set a goal to raise $12,000 - the amount needed to sponsor a single refugee. To date, I have raised $700 towards this goal through on-campus fundraisers, but I know that the StFX community of students, staff, alumni and friends is generous and I'm still confident that the $12,000 goal can be reached. I have set up this page along with my professor, Dr. Karen Blair, in order to help reach this goal.

$660 Raised Offline at #Preach2018
Update posted by Karen Blair at 04:00 pmDelegates at #Preach2018 (Preaching to the Choir - An International LGBTQ Psychology Conference), which was held on June 24th and 25th in Montreal, Quebec, donated $660 to Rainbow Railroad and we have added that amount to our "offline" fundraising tally! We are still hoping to reach a total of $12,000

Update posted by Karen Blair at 01:47 amBefore this fundraiser began online, $700 was raised over the last few months through a bake sale and coffee house donations associated with X-Pride. This past weekend, $542.50 was raised when X-Pride took care of the coatcheck services for the X-Ring celebrations!
