Steven’s cancer treatment

Update posted by Sharon Lee On Sep 19, 2018

Hello...

I'm continuing with my treatment and holding up okay and things seem to be going well. I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful for you too. As I told a friend earlier this week, I'm trying to remember to actually feel as thankful as I actually feel. Sometimes there is a disconnect and that awareness gets diluted. I was in the hospital Wednesday and Thursday for the usual procedures. That's my brief medical update.

All your support, prayer, encouragement, thoughts, belief and help is amazing.

The volume of love and support flowing to us through our church is inspiring. I've been meaning to share some of that story, but don't know that I can do it justice.

Thank you again for your help and encouragement and support. I appreciate every bit of it.

Things are going pretty well on my end. I had another PET Scan a few weeks ago and the result were as good as we could have hoped. The caveat is my micro spreading doesn't show up on PET Scans anyway, but the result shows I am not any worse. Which is great! So things are going in the right direction.

I went through a potential set back as two new spots appeared, on my left forearm near the elbow and on my left shoulder. They didn't look particularly suspicious but were inexplicable, and looked similar to the rare A-melanoma I had removed on that same arm. So we were concerned. My oncologist referred me back to a dermatologist who decided we needed to biopsy each spot. There was some delay in scheduling and eventually, over a few weeks, the two spots faded - especially in the few days leading up to the procedures. The day of the biopsies, we decided not to proceed. In any case, that was a big relief. I guess I hadn't allowed myself to realize how concerned I was about that, until I experienced the great sense of relief. But we'll see. I'll be re-examined again in that regard in a month.

I'm going to the hospital a couple days every other week now for blood work, oncologist consultation and immunotherapy treatment in the Chemotherapy Center. I'm in all day today. The staff is pleasant and, even though it is a large operation, many there greet me by name. I suppose being the non-Chinese Lee makes me stand out. The plan is for my ongoing treatment to continue through the end of the year.

I do feel very fatigued all the time and my joints hurt, and I now have "sever degeneration" in my hip joint and a lot of pain there - day and night. So that's not great. When I stand up, I'm like an old man with both jet lag and the flu struggling to get up off the sofa, so it takes me several seconds to get my balance and equilibrium and joints all lined up and ready before I start moving, limping forward. Other than that, I'm tolerating treatment pretty well and am continuously thankful I have not suffered serious side effects and that things are going in the right direction.

Sharon is handling a lot and is very supportive. Keira (6) and Sam (4) are full of love and hugely entertaining. We've been going to different beaches on weekends, which is great fun. And I feel better in the water.

I'm thankful for each one of you! Sending love and good wishes.

To each anonymous donor, good friend, old friend, new friend, family member, and friend-of-a-friend:

Happy New Year!! Thank you for your support. It is amazing to experience the support and encouragement flowing from this wonderful collection of people. I am stuck in an unpleasant world now, but each one of you has taken hold of my hand to walk me through it. That's how it feels. I appreciate it and thank you for doing it.

I am mindful that some of you, or some people close to you, have been through worse, and now that I am gaining perspective I wish I could somehow retroactively change that. I also wish I could prevent similar things from ever happening to you in the future. I also wish I could say something more meaningful than "Thank You" to express my gratitude.

Dear Friends,

Steven had his first treatment, administered by 90-minute intravenous drip. He's experienced some muscle cramps and chills, but no other side effects so far. It's only been 2 days. We pray that continues to be the case.

Thank you again for your continued support and kindness. We appreciate it very much.

Hang in their Steve! Put a blanket on that man. He’s never had any extra blubber to keep him warm. Or hair! (well, a bit of hair).

Your kind support is making all things possible. Thank you so much for your care, encouragement and inspiration. The next phase of treatment has been delayed until Steven's latest skin graft heals further, so the new target is 5 December. We are hoping for the best!... and for minimal side effects. Thank you again for your help!

I hope your skin graft heals completely, soon!
