Steven's Abiliy Centre, for young adults/school leavers with disabilities is based in Bedfordview, Gauteng, South Africa. Currently we have 8 young adults who attend the centre from Monday - Friday. Unfortunately many of them cannot afford to pay the monthly membership fees to attend the centre. The fees are used to cover costs such as the staff, food and rent. Without them we would not be able to function. The staff provide very much support as well as a programme specifically designed to encourage the spirit on entrepreneurship and employment. Some of which include computers, gift making, arts and crafts, some degree of physical activities amongst others. The main aim of the centre is to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities and build self esteem.

Seven's Ability Centre was started by Vanessa dos Santos in May 2016 after her son Steven (who has multiple disabilities) had turned 18 and had to leave the special school he was attending. He was at home bored with no friends, and very little activities to keep him occupied. He was slowly regressing.

CHALLENGES FACED

Once leaving school, many young adults with disabilities like Steven start to experience boredom, depression and aggression. This is mostly due to seeing their siblings getting on with there lives such as going to university, parties, getting their drivers licence, married and starting their own families. But this is not happening to them. Most of them have no friends and don't experience the freedom of adulthood. We aim to deal with these challenges through the programmes and enhance their abilities and further develop skills of its members and include them in the community.

Since these adults have been attending the centre their lives have changed significantly. They now have friends, activities and a sense of belonging and responsibility. Some of the comments from parents have been, "Steven's Ability Centre has changed my daughters life", "They absolutely love coming in daily". "The staff is so good with my child"....

  • This is such an incredibly important space for those gorgeous peeps in the photo. One young man in particular is very close to my heart. I have known him since the day he was born. I have watched him (and his fiercely determined parents) grow with every challenge and struggle. I have watched him defy his own inhibitions about the perceptions the rest of the world may have of him (or should I say his disability) and find this amazing space where he can finally take his unique and very special place in the world. Support this fundraiser and you will support their confidence and courage in the process. Love you Doon-Magoon. So proud of you!
