Standing Up for Tyler

Hi,

I had to share this because it is so eloquently written and so incredibly true and something that my husband and I strive for as parents.

"Parents need to be absolute, vigilant advocates for their children. They are our most precious gift and our insight/promise to the future. If your heart is telling you something is wrong, even when the “experts” are at first telling you, “You are wrong” ~ keep fighting. With all you are and all you have. You need to fight for them. You are their only true resource.

And in fighting for them, there may be confusion on their part. They are, after all, only children. If you are working for their best interest, they will one day understand and I bet it will be a lot sooner than later. Don’t do “easy” if easy isn’t enough. “Hard” is tough. Heart breaking and mind numbing, but sometimes necessary.

Don’t make it about “yourself” ~ it’s NOT. Help them fight THEIR fight. Work on yourself on your own time and don’t burden them with your “stuff”. Children are resilient and forgiving and they love beyond our adult comprehension. Don’t do anything to change that, the world will do that soon enough.

Make sure if you’re angry, it’s at a situation and not at your child. There is a difference and it matters. Your child can absolutely be your best friend but you also need to step up to the plate and be a parent. You need to nurture their skills to allow them to enter the world safely and securely on their own with as little fear and trepidation as possible. Then and only then can you relax, but just a little. They will always need you and as they continue to grow, you will need them too.

Hopefully they will grow into strong adults with their own views, values, beliefs, and opinions. Hopefully they will model all the good you have taught them and throw aside all the rest. Rejoice in their individualism. Listen to their thoughts. They deserve to be heard. You can be the teacher but you can also allow yourself to be taught and that is a wonderful realization. So remember to fight, just fight. If it’s about them and it matters to you, then it matters to them ~ times a million ♥ "

My husband and I have been in a battle to get custody of his son for a year now. We got custody and are now being taken back to court and have already spent copious amounts on lawyer fees so we are having a hard time paying for one again. I will not go into details surrounding this but he needs to be living in an environment like our home that is structured and safe. We realize this is unconventional but we are running out of options in our fight for Tyler's future
