This is an appeal for support to get Virginia Maina, a 58 year old mother and wife out of hospital to her next stage of treatment after she ruptured blood vessel in the brain on the 5th of February, leading to a stroke. Virginia is from Nairobi, Kenya.

After having been attended at three different hospitals in Nairobi , in as many days without much help and her condition deteriorating, she finally got admitted at a larger, more expensive private hospital in Nairobi. She had brain surgery after which she stayed in ICU for a few days and HDU for 2 weeks. During this time she was also diagnosed of diabetes. After a month at this 4th hospital Virginia was transferred to a 5th hospital which is cheaper for nursing care and physiotherapy. But she again developed a heart problem due to blood clots caused by immobility, and an ankle wound due to infections which is currently being treated. She has been at this 5th hospital for over 55 days. Although she is now out of danger, she is yet to recover her mobility and speech. The hospital has been ready to discharge her to a nursing care facility more appropriate for physiotherapy and ongoing care but not before her medical bills are cleared.

Her total bill from all the 5 hospitals as of last week of April stood at $52, 241. The family has managed to pay $14, 365 so far and have exhausted all options to raise income. The outstanding bill stands at $37, 875 but will continue to grow if she is not discharged from the current hospital.

Before this struck, Virginia was a jovial and a well-known generous lady who touched many lives in her community. Many of these people have already contributed towards her medical bills. Her friends and family had organised a fundraising event which has now been cancelled because of movement and gathering restrictions. Some of her family and friends have had their livelihoods affected by the same restrictions which has significantly reduced their ability to help. Without this external support, Virginia will continue to face the ballooning debt as well as remain hospital bound against her wishes. Both of these significantly affect her mental resolve which she needs for her recovery.

We are asking for two things during this time. First and foremost, we ask you to keep Virginia, and her family in thought and prayer as we ask for her healing. We pray that the doctors and medical staff would be filled with wisdom as they make decisions for next steps in her treatment. We ask that you pray for peace and comfort for her family and extended family, as they navigate the days ahead. In addition, we are also asking for donations to help cover medical expenses. Any contribution will make an incredible difference as we continue to support this amazing family during this time.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support, they are incredibly life-giving and appreciated at this time.
