Clockwise: Brother, me, dad and mom (Jan. 2023)

Dear all,

My name is James Modesto. I am a university student born, raised and living in Hong Kong with my family for over 20 years.

I was very hesitant at first to set to page because my pride held me back. Now, I do not see the need to hide something that has been with me and my family for over eight years.

It came as a shock to everyone when my father, John Eric Modesto, was rushed to the hospital in mid 2015 because of a heart attack. My mother had to leave me and my younger brother ( 6 at that time ) for Hong Kong from the Philippines for a few months, making a young me think about the possible reasons as to why this had happened. He never had any vices, such as smoking or doing drugs. He drank occasionally, but never to the point of becoming a crazed drunk.

When photos of him in tubes and flanked by medical equipment began to spread, it broke the hearts of family members and close friends. It took months for people to accept what had happened to him.

After his subsequent open heart surgery. everything seemed fine. Three months after the procedure, nurses on site were surprised to see him up and walking like it was nothing. And an unexpected visit from him in early December in the Philippines gave us the biggest smiles and the warmest hugs.

Not long after, my family moved back to Hong Kong for good in late December.

Entering 2016, he had an operation for a tumor in his left kidney.

Two years later, he was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma.

He continuously took medication to slow the cancer's progress. There were so many that we lost count. An attempt to work in 2019 did not go through as side effects, such as fatigue and dry skin, plagued him every month.

The medication, including oral chemo, never helped him recover.

And in December 2022, he almost collapsed because fluid began to build up in his lungs.

We learned that his cancer reached Stage IV and it metastasising in his lungs and bones.

Back and forth trips to the hospital became more frequent as they had to drain the fluids.

He was finally admitted to a hospital on 25th March, 2023 because of shortness of breath and body pain.

Talks with the doctor prior to his passing revealed that his right lung had multiple shadows.

The past few months have been challenging for us because we feared for him as my brother and I have school, and my mother has been the only one supporting us. There was no one at the house to be with him 24/7. I was even thinking of postponing my studies at one point, but my parents wouldn't want that. My father wouldn't want that.

So what went wrong?

My father opened up a year or two back that doctors had detected dark spots or shadows in his kidney during a check up prior to his heart attack. He shrugged it off.

I felt a sense of anger and disappointment because I thought he would handle it, but he didn't.

Looking back, I wish he told us earlier. But nothing can be done and we have finally accepted the outcome.

He finally succumbed to the disease on 1 Apr. 2023. He did not die alone as he left peacefully surrounded by the people he loved.

Dad and his younger sister (26 Mar. 2023)

Dad and his older brother (27 Mar. 2023)

While it is hard to accept the reality of his passing, we are blessed to have a strong support network of family and friend.

God has called His Angel back Home and we are filled with joy that he has returned to meet our Creator.

We'll catch you later, dad. Have a blast up there and let's talk soon!

Dad surrounded by me, his older brother, brother-in-law and nephews (8 Mar. 2023)

On behalf of the family, we would never expect people to donate large sums of money. We are only asking for a bit of support for a person whose life means a lot to many.

We celebrated John's life on the 15th and 16th April. The reception was great as he was visited by many of his good friends, and most importantly, his family in Hong Kong. While mostly depicted as a event for mourning, we wanted it to be a celebration of his time on. . . . .
