My beloved home country Sri Lanka is currently going through it's worst flooding in 14 years (since the T-tsunami that devastated us) and as of Monday May 29th, Red Cross reported that 194 people have been killed and the death toll keeps rising as each day passes. 99 individuals are missing and a staggering 600,000 people are displaced.
When the T-tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, i was living in Colombo and almost lost my father to the catastrophe that happened that day. I experienced firsthand what displacement felt like, i saw the fear in my parents eyes while they tried to process the depth of how much this disaster was going to affect our lives. I also witnessed what a donation could do, how much it could help someone who came close to losing it all.
I will forever be grateful to the fact that the strongest impact of the floods in 2004 did not hit Colombo, the way provinces up north felt it's strength, and therefore my family did not suffer to the extent of many unfortunate others as a result of this calamity. Those that were hit the hardest, lost everything. and I mean everything. There are victims of the current floods who have also lost everything and do not have the financial capabilities to recuperate in this time of desperate need.
As many of you know, my family still lives in Sri Lanka. The money raised for this cause will be sent to my mom who will use it to buy supplies requested by Red Cross. Its reassuring when you know the money you spend to help someone is actually going towards that cause, rather than through channels which you have no personal connection to.
So, i kindly ask all my friends and family, to donate any amount at all, whatever is comfortable for you, so that a little girl or boy will have their tummy filled with food and go to sleep with a smile on their face because someone out there was looking out for them :)
Thank you from the very bottom of my heart.
