Having dropped out of university in September, I've been looking for a way to use this year as a chance to grow, and I believe I've finally found it...in Sri Lanka!

Embarking on a programme run by The Mighty Roar, I will be flying out to Sri Lanka on the 2nd of May for 3 weeks, where I will join a group of volunteers and locals to work on the Sea Turtle Conservation project. The sanctuary in Sri Lanka is one of the few to deal with all 7 species of turtle (all of which are endangered!), and the project aims to involve volunteers like myself in beach patrols, relocating nests, monitoring the local turtles and even releasing baby turtles into the sea.

Unfortunately, sea turtle populations around the world are on a sharp decline due to natural predators and severe human interference. One of the biggest problems in Sri Lanka are human poachers, who miss-handle the eggs to sell to the turtle sanctuaries or to locals as a source of food or medicine. It is the aim of the Sea Turtle Sanctuary to create safe places for nests to be made and for babies to be raised.

I am so excited to get out of Europe and experience a new, diverse culture, as well as work on an important and rewarding wildlife conservation project. While The Mighty Roar keep the costs as low as possible, my trip will not be cheap. With flights, transfers, travel insurance, criminal background checks, a visa, vaccinations and food still to pay for (as well as the actual volunteering fee for the programme!), I am asking for your help in making this experience happen. Every little helps towards getting me out on the beaches of Mirissa, Unawatuna and Ambalangoda and helping preserve the precious few species of turtle we have left.

For more information on the project, fees and for some wonderful photos of the hatchery see here: https://themightyroar.com/projects/sri-lanka-sea-t...

Thank you so much for helping make this gap year extra special!
