Hello everyone,

My name is Rosie and I will be in August 2019 venturing off to Sri Lanka to work with an organisation known as Plan My Gap Year.

The PMGY Foundation is a UK registered charity (1169415) that has been set up to help provide financial aid and assistance to many projects ranging from renovation to wildlife conservation in many different countries like Sri Lanka and Bali.
The objective of the PMGY Foundation is the prevention or relief of poverty of people living in the communities we support by providing or assisting in the provision of education, training, healthcare projects, Wildlife conservation projects and all the necessary support designed to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient.

I will be personally volunteering on a turtle conservation project with PMGY for 4 weeks where I will learn how to collect eggs, how to treat turtles and how to send turtles back to the sea. Working with animals has been a passion of mine since I was very young and I believe this volunteer project will help me to develop my confidence and able me to help these animals to survive out in their natural habitat. The programme aims to provide daily care and rehabilitation for the disabled turtles with the long term goal to release back to the wild as well as protecting turtle eggs that have been stolen by local poachers.

Turtles are under threat in Sri Lanka and volunteers are really needed to help out with conservation efforts. Fishing is one of the major industries in Ambalangoda and the location of the project is very close to the local fisheries port. Sea turtles are often found in fishing nets and many have lost limbs becoming disabled and are no longer able to survive in the wild.

I am looking to raise £800 to help towards the funding of my volunteer trip and part of the money I raise goes towards the project itself to help keep the rehabilitation centre up and running to help care for sick and vulnerable turtles.

Thank you guys for taking your time to read this! I can't wait to get started on my new adventure.

Rosie Paine.
