Spread Love for Astrid Gaylle’s Heart

Let’s spread love for baby Astrid Gaylle Lanciola who will undergo for an open-heart surgery in Philippine Heart Center this coming December 2018.

Baby Astrid Gaylle or Astrid to her family, relatives and friends was diagnosed to have Trisonomy 21 which is commonly known as Down Syndrome after she was born last October 2017. A genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of the chromosome 21.

In addition, after series of diagnostic baby screening tests, her doctors found out that Astrid has congenital heart diseases called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) which means she have 3 holes in the heart.

Among these three “holes”, PDA is the most critical because this small vessel should have close shortly after the child is born and starts to breathe on their own. But until now, Astrid’s heart condition is still open.

Also, the size of her VSD is getting bigger from 0.4cm to 1 cm. Her doctors explained that her heart size is not normal.

Now, Baby Astrid has been taking medication to help her to improve her health condition. However, these medicines/vaccines are not enough to prevent her from any viruses. A month ago, Astrid was rushed to the hospital twice due to pneumonia.

The second hospitalization was a little painful because Baby Astrid almost lost her life. She was advised to stay for another few weeks for further medical test for her heart condition. The parents were advised by doctors of the current heart condition which requires Astrid to have an immediate open-heart surgery. This surgery will close the holes of the heart.

The surgery would cost at least PHP 600,000.00. This means additional costs like hospitalization stay, further medications, post treatment/therapies and professional fees are not yet included.
