Meet my friend Sphiwe Mfundisi. Once upon a time he was a young boy whom, after having been drafted into a local football club, showed a promising future in the sport. Despite his fathers wishes not to, he dropped out of school to pursue a serious career playing soccer full time. This didn't last long and his dream was shattered as a result of a serious knee injury.

His mom had passed away and without much guidance he made the decision (albeit a poor one) not to return to school but rather to take up casual work where and when he could find it. He landed up losing his dad as well and was left to take care of his sisters and his now widowed step-mom. Years passed, the clock ticked and we reached 2013 which is when I first met Sphiwe.

During the brief time he worked with me I found him to be loyal, eager to learn and keen to better himself. I asked him one day why he did not have a matric and he told me his story. We decided together that the best thing he could do was to get his matric and so I made a few calls, only to find out that we had missed the cut off date for writing matric on the old curriculum by one month. Sphiwe would have to repeat earlier grades which landed up being very expensive. Since 2013 we have tried a few things but to no avail. We have however narrowed down the choices to two courses - Diesel Mechanics or Boiler Making. The one is more expensive than the other and longer so at this stage we would be happy to raise the R8500 (about $600 excluding books and transport ) required for boiler making. The course is offered through Ekhurhuleni artisans project in Kempton Park - you can verify this here

Sphiwe is someone I would invest funds in if I had them. Sadly, I don't. So the best I can do is give him my time.

Possibly you have the resources to change his life in a most extraordinary way?

Sadly in South Africa there are thousands of Sphiwe's and if only it was possible to help each and every one, but it isn't. I can only help my friend whom I believe is a good person who deserves a second chance at a better future and life.

If you can donate to this cause, you can rest assured that it is so very appreciated. If you can't that's ok - perhaps you can share this campaign far and wide for all to see so that someone else might find themselves in a position to donate.

Thank you for taking the time to read this shortened version of my friends story.

In hope,

Loren
