Speech Therapy for Benben using Proloquo2Go

Update posted by Jonathan Dayrit On Jul 10, 2016

10 July 2016

Over the past weeks, and as part of preparing Benben for formal AAC speech augmentation using Proloquo2Go, we allowed Benben to spend 2 - 3 hours per day on the iPad. He got 're-acquianted' with his favorite iPad apps such as Temple Run 2, Shape Sorter, Injini Lite, Letter School, Pepi Play, Pink Fong songs and stories, and a few other kids' learning apps. We also oriented him on Phonemes - phonics by Lingraphica and gently introduced other free AAC tools just to get a sense of whether it would get his attention.

In the past years, Benben has been using the iPad, an android tablet and his mom's smartphone mostly to listen to music (his favorites include Build Me Up Buttercup and All About the Bass by the way) and watch short videos / cartoons. His use of these devices have now shifted to more interactive mode and we are really hoping he gets on board AAC quickly.

As part of the campaign / project, we created a simple Youtube channel to video document and show different stages of Benben's life. Here, we want to show his use of mobile devices for learning and for AAC among his other activities and interests (eating, swimming, eating again...).

Benben's Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGkf5rUsKwgilSYdH...

Here is a video of Benben using Phonemes (phonics and lip reading) -

Since display of video is limited here in GoGetFunding site, we encourage you to check out Benben's Youtube channel and would greatly appreciate it if you will subscribe to it (it's free of course, and you get informed when new videos are uploaded or added if you subscribe to the channel).

We'll surely keep you informed and updated when and once there are videos available of Benben using the Proloquo2Go app for speech augmentation as well as other speech therapy sessions and whatever improvements he accomplishes in relation to speech and in other aspects of life as well.

Again, many many thanks to everyone of you who supported and continue to support this campaign. We have observed and continue to notice that Benben feels the love and attention and support from everyone (he has a very high comprehension skills).

Sharing one of my favorite videos on Youtube. Produced in 2011, this video entitled Apps for Autism shows a segment on the show '60 Minutes' that helps to explain and describe how technology, mobile devices and apps are used as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools for speech augmentation.

I could not share or run the video on this page / site as the owner prefers it to be ran from Youtube (link below).

Click here to view the video in Youtube (Apps for Autism)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_8b7PgnNQQ

Viewing the video would give one a sense of how AAC tools - and Proloquo2Go specifically -helps people with autism overcome frustrations in trying to 'communicate' what they want, what they need and what they want to say or express. Basically, it is a very useful communications tool.

It was relevant in 2011, it is still (and more) relevant today.

Over the next couple of days, we will also try to upload videos of Benben use the iPad for AAC and other learning apps.

Hi everyone! As of June 15, 2016, we have officially ended this modest campaign for Benben. We thank everyone for their contributions and involvement in the campaign (including prayers and messages of support and encouragement). We consider the campaign to be successful as we have reached and surpassed the modest goal within the one month we ran the campaign. The combination of online (via Paypal and GoGetFunding) as well as offline backing (remittance service, bank deposits) plus additional pledges when combined have exceeded the $500 campaign goal. The amounts, however big or small, equally contributed to the success of the campaign. Rest assured this will be used for the purpose mentioned. We are extending the campaign until the end of the month (30 July 2016) to accommodate those who expressed their desire to continue contributing and receiving updates regarding this campaign. We will continue to provide updates. Thank you so much to everyone. We cannot express how truly blessed and happy we are in seeing and feeling the love you all have for Benben and in the desire to help and be involved in using the Proloquo2Go tool (iPad app) to augment / assist / improve Benben's speech and communications.

- Thank you for being important in the life of Benben. It does matter.....

Try to decrypt the "hidden" message in the line(s) below - a little game just for fun:
Thank you so much (in no particular order) - Marg, Hedy & Dar, Bong, Elmer, Roland, Colet / Lei / Lois, Raul, Lani P, Ana Jane, Gaye, Tina, Robert, Ruthie, Lani A, Gabriel, Ricky & Donna, Sammy, Carey, Rory, Annie, Jaye.... if we forgot to mention anyone, apologies... please let us know so we can acknowledge accordingly. Thank you for the nth time....

We are very happy to announce that 21 days into the campaign, we have reached more than 80% of our modest goal of $500. We cannot thank you enough for your contributions. backing, messages and prayers.

While all (or most) of you who contributed have preferred to remain anonymous (ie not be mentioned or acknowledged publicly), rest assured that we do acknowledge (privately) your kind gesture and consider you as partners in the goal of improving Benben's speech therapy and speech augmentation. Thank you so much.

In the Campaign page here in GoGetFunding, listed are 9 backers and $171. These are considered as the "online contributions coursed through GoGetFunding". At the same time, some of you contributed through other means outside of the GoGetFunding platform (or at least didn't use the GoGetFunding payment gateway) but we still acknowledge that and are proud to say that there are additional 6 offline backers contributing somewhere in the range of $285.

And while (and since) we respect your desire to remain anonymous, we will not mention your names but would generally acknowledge the following groups who backed and supported this campaign:

  • Relatives (Dayrit / Flores / Galang / Fariñas clans) - at least 5 of you who have contributed a total of not less than $250 online and offline;
  • My High School batchmates - at least 4 of you who have contributed a total of around $100 online and offline;
  • Brothers and Sisters in the faith (Churchmates) - thank you for your contributions of around $150 online and offline;
  • Friends of friends and people we have not met before but willingly shared towards the goal and vision for Benben - It's quite heartwarming to know that there are people we have never met before but willingly share the vision and willingly shared in this advocacy.

Rest assured that all these are accounted for and will be used towards the goal for Benben's speech therapy and speech augmentation. Again, thank you for being involved as partners towards this goal.

We have 9 days left before we officially end this modest campaign.

This is a quick Day 9 update on this campaign for Benben's speech augmentation / speech therapy. We are so thankful for the online and offline backing / contributions to this campaign.In just 9 days, we are already near 50% of the campaign target. Our dilemma now is that most of the contributors / backers want to continue to remain anonymous. And although we want to really acknowledge the kind gesture and the source of the contributions, we respect the desire of the contributors to remain anonymous. The only thing we can say at the moment is 'Thank you so much for your support and cooperation in this modest campaign'.

Flash update: We have updated the 'offline contribution' figures to $140. This is also to acknowledge the $120 contribution of a very good friend (yes, he wants to remain anonymous) sent offline. Many many many thanks!

Wow.. just wow!! Just five (5) days into this campaign (small and modest project in support of Benben's speech therapy / augmentation) and we already have:

  • A little under 300 views (considering that GoGetFunding has not set the campaign in public view and that the views are mostly from social media contacts to whom the campaign was shared);
  • A little under $100 in online contributions or a little above 15% of the target goal;
  • Received numerous messages and calls expressing pledges and offline contributions to the campaign;
  • Six (and more) "backers" listing themselves as anonymous in GoGetFunding but generously contributing to the campaign. A big big "thank you" from Benben. As I've mentioned in my private messages to some of you, we can all say (or claim) that we are part of improving Benben's communication and speech augmentation in spite of the challenges autism brings.

We cannot express how happy we are with how this campaign (I like to refer to it as a small and modest project) is going. It's not in the amounts received, but rather the joy comes from knowing and realizing that there are a lot of you out there - friends, relatives, past and present work mates, (past) school mates, friends of friends and other acquiantances - who do care not just for Benben but for children with 'special needs' in general.

And to use a line from one of Benben's favorite show / movie - High School Musical: "We're all in this together".

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. More updates later.....

Since this campaign involves the use of Proloquo2Go for Benben's speech therapy and improvement, I might as well help to enlighten some of us about Proloquo2Go. Please note that I am, in no way, related to and/or promoting Assistiveware and Proloquo2Go. It's just that this campaign specifically involves the use of Proloquo2Go together with an iPad (it follows then I am in no way promoting or affiliated with Apple and iPad - although I wish I am / was).

Here are some links to videos that show how Proloquo2Go helps children (and adults) with special needs 'communicate with others' via AAC.

This modest campaign for an iPad application (Proloquo2Go) to support Benben's speech therapy using AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) was started last May 15, 2016. Four days into the campaign, our family is so overwhelmed by the support and reception by friends and supporters. Honestly, we did not expect such support and backing for the campaign. Most of those who initially supported (GoGetfunding refer to them / you as "backers") prefer to remain anonymous here at GoGetFunding although our family know who you / they are and this is a "shout-out" to say Thank you so much for your support. This is truly appreciated no matter how small your contributions are (note: they may appear small to you but for us we are so much overwhelmed and did not expect the amounts you provided).

Personally, I was surprised to receive support from friends and schoolmates back in high school, family members / relatives, and other family friends. Benben's campaign also received offline backing and pledges which I will also update here.

The campaign runs for 15 days in total (it is now on it's fourth day and have 11 days remaining) and this early, we are already very thankful and happy with the warm reception and support received in this campaign. We are all hopeful and eager to see Benben improve his speech and AAC via the Proloquo2Go AAC application.

More updates to follow......

This is to also acknowledge receipt of a $20 contribution sent offline. Backer wants to remain anonymous; nonetheless, the kind gesture is highly appreciated and acknowledged.
