Space Lab One is a small group of middle school students from Central Middle International School in Kokomo, Indiana.  The seven students make up a great Lego League team!  They have worked very hard this year and it payed off, they placed second in the First Lego League state championship in Fort Wayne on December 14th 2013, and because of this they were invited to an international competition in Toronto, Ontario Canada from June 4th to the 7th.  Lego League has taught these children very important life lessons, not only have they learned how to make robots out of legos, they also learned valuble information about natural disasters and what they can do to help fix the aftermath of diasters such as floods, tornados, and tsnamis.  These children single handidly program and build the robots to acheive certain objectives, and their robot has scored first in all of the competitions that they competed in.  They also have to learn to communicate with each other, incorporate each persons ideas into the project, and to work as a team because without teamwork they wouldn't have been able to accomplish this level of victory.     In order for them to go to Canada they will need help with funding, the trip will cost between 6 and 7 thousand dollars, to pay for hotel, food and passports.  This oppurtunity is huge, they will be competing with 71 other teams from all over the world! Teams are coming from Japan, Italy, Russia Saudi Arabia, Alaska, California and Florida just to name a few.  Any money raised will go directly to paying for this trip, if we raise more then we need we will use the extra money to purchase new bricks (brain of the robot), sensors and motors.  These children have the chance to meet and compete against children from every corner of the world, which will pay off ten fold in thier futures, because of the diverisity, language barries, and culture differences they will have to adapt to these things in order to communicate with the other children.  They are all exicted and nervous at the same time, they are aware that this will be a lot different then competing here in the US, but they are all looking forward to this once in a lifetime chance!  I would love to see people give to this fund raiser and show these kids why we live in the greatest country in the world, because we help one another every chance we get.  I know some people can't give much but every penny helps! I will continue to update this page throughout to keep every one up to date with what we have raised, and hopefully I can update this showing that we met our goal! Give a little or give a lot, and share this with everyone you all know.  These kids are our future so lets help get them what they need in order to go!

  • I was lucky enough to be a part of the SpaceLab when I went to Central MS about 15 years ago. It's hard to believe it's been that long, but being a part of SpaceLab and later KHS' TechnoKats robotics team really made an impact on me. The things kids do through these programs is just amazing- and now that I'm a teacher myself, I can't help but want kids to have these kinds of opportunities. Make Kokomo proud, SpaceLabOne!
