Our NGO Movimento Gaio works in Portugal, since 2012 in the mountains of the Serra da Freita, an area under the protection of the European Natura 2000 Network.
We created and realized a number of Replantation actions with the help of hundreds of volunteers, planted thousands of indigenous deciduous tress. We work mainly in commons, the so called baldios.
In August of 2016 a serie of wildfires ravaged the Serra da Freita again. We we started over, amplified the magnitude of our work, conscious of our responsibility for the nature and the society. To create a resilient forest, it needs resilient people. Now, the success of our effort is visible: growing trees in an area of 15 ha.
The baldios included in the area of the Natura 2000 Network are not allowed to plant eucalyptus, the highly inflammable especie, but the private land owners can do what ever they want. This way, the mountains are exposed to an enormous plunder, the uncontrolled cut down of native trees and the illegal plantation of eucalyptus.
The only real way to contradict this ecologic fraude, is to buy land from private landowners with the aim of planting around our plantations indigenous deciduous tress.
The only way to counter this ecological fraud is to buy land from private landowners to plant indigenous deciduous trees around our plantations.
We shape the future because ...
Plants produce oxygen, the tallest plants are trees, in larger groups they form forests. We need forests if we want to survive as humans on our planet. Near-natural mixed forests are much less susceptible to forest fires than mono cultures.
Our aim is to Sow Conscience in the fertile mind of society, inviting everybody to the noble task of Planting Trees.
When restoring the forests, we do not just recover the Natural Harmony of the territories, but we also restore the human consciousness, connecting ourselves with the Earth and recovering the Memory of Life.
We plant native deciduous trees such as oaks, ash trees, mountain ash, wild cherry and many more. We are planters of oxygen and water.
