Southern Cross Teams - 2019 India Cricket Tour

Our Girls’ 1st Cricket Team

Southern Cross Schools girls are the 2016 Limpopo "Provincial" Under 19 Champions, and the 2017 Limpopo Under 19 Runners-up. We are a very passionate cricket team that has grown from strength to strength, and we have been presented with an opportunity to travel to India in 2019 on a cricket tour.

We will be playing 5 games; Game 1 will be played in Delhi, Game 2 will be played about 150km from Agra, Game 3 will be in Agra, Game 4 will be in Jaipur and Game 5 will also be in Jaipur.

Not only will we be playing a high level of cricket, but we will be immersing ourselves in the rich culture of India.

From the Players

Michaela Naude (Girls Captain):

Captain's Report:

I'll start off by giving my name and then a brief outline of what cricket is and means to me as well as what this 2019 tour will mean to me. I would give a brief outline of my cricket career but there is not anything brief about it, so...

My name is Michaela Naude, I am 17 and I am the proud captain of both the Southern Cross Girls 1 st Team and the U19 Limpopo Cricket team. Cricket to me is not just a game, cricket is a religion, a passion and it's something that I undertake with a lot of pride, whether it be practice or out in the middle. Cricket is who I am. I have played cricket since the age of 5, and not once has this sport become boring in my eyes. I have never missed a day without thinking of it, talking about it or playing it.

What this tour will mean to me?

Well, as mentioned, I captain the girls 1st team so with that being said; it is not just about me. My girls will always come first and to be perfectly honest, with my little message you are reading at this point in time I know in my heart that this tour will mean absolutely everything to the girls and I. The dedication we have for the game is amazing, the hours of practice we put in and the manner in which we play the game never ceases to amaze me, and I am certain that this tour will make us

more passionate and more committed to what we love doing. This tour will also go a long way in reaffirming that there is more to cricket than just here in Hoedspruit and Limpopo.

The girls and myself thank you in advance for the support and would like to assure you that this is all for a good cause and a valuable experience which will make a difference in all of our lives

2017 Season:

This cricket season, I believe, has meant more for us as a team than our last season (where we actually won the season) or any other season that I've been a part of since I came to Southern Cross. Before Southern Cross, I knew there was a game called cricket but never had I ever pictured myself playing it at all, I just couldn't understand anything and believed it was for the more informed. I surprised myself when I actually signed up for it as a sport in grade 8.

Last season was the perfect definition of cricket and showed us the realities of cricket as a team- it showed us that staying humble is vital in playing the game but also that you should never forget to enjoy the game and for me to take every ball that comes as the first ball. Prior to this season I had mastered playing cricket with the mind and doing everything that was expected from me, but what this season taught me was to play cricket from the heart and to enjoy the game while understanding

my purpose and function in the team.

INDIA 2019

The first thing that came to mind when I heard about this tour was “It's in my Matric year!!” I automatically thought I'd probably get cut out from going as the school would probably hold all matrics back, but when I found out that this included us, I immediately got hyped up to raise funds, especially since we had been given notice a full year in advance.

This tour I believe is the next big thing for Southern Cross and is actually the beginning of many to come. Cricket is taken really seriously at my school and is something that the school and the learners both pride themselves on, as it's something that we can have reasonable confidence in. This tour would be an amazing experience and is what I believe to be a missing piece to our cricket game, as it is the only experience we lack in order to play the game from our hearts and not just by obligation. It is the experience that would give me a glimpse of how it would feel to play international cricket and I really do believe it would be really beneficial, not only to cricket awareness but more especially girls’ cricket!

Rebecca James:

2017 Season:

Last cricket season was as amazing as the one before. Our team becomes one and no one is ever left behind. Twelve players but our hearts beat as one.

I started playing cricket in 2016 and I was welcomed with open arms as a junior! The team have helped me become the cricket player I have become today.

INDIA 2019:

The tour to India would be a massive step for us and would be incredible if we got the opportunity. I also feel it would promote woman's cricket more.

Who are we? Champions!

2017 Season:

I have never played cricket before and it was something I was willing to try as a new sport. I'm still learning when it comes to bowling and have improved a lot when it comes to batting and fielding. I have been given many opportunities to prove myself and my worth in the team. This season, as with the last, we made it to the finals.Although we did not win, we were given a chance to prove our good sportsmanship skills. Looking back now, I would not have changed my sport for anything else.

INDIA 2019:

India in 2019 is yet another opportunity for me to prove myself and my worth to the team. This opportunity will also give me the platform to build passion for the sport and experience life changing experiences in a new culture.

From the Players

Dewald Dumon:

2017 Season:

This season was a good bonding season and we all know our exact role in the team and since we are unbeaten, our confidence could not be higher. All the junior players have realised that the seniors can't do all the work and helped out a lot in all aspects of the game.

INDIA 2019:

This tour would mean a lot to the team and me as an individual. The difference in culture will be an experience to remember and so will seeing the country. But obviously, playing cricket in the heart of India will be unbelievable!! And doing it with our girls’ team would just make the experience complete.

Zwelithini (Zweli) Nkosi:

2017 Season:

Last season was by far the greatest season of cricket which I have ever played. For instance: the first time I walked onto the pitch, Dewald was waiting for me, waiting for us to get our season off to a great winning start. We made a 50 run partnership but could not close the deal. But luckily we had a chance to redeem ourselves against the team which beat us in the opening game at the final.

INDIA 2019:

This tour means a lot to the boys and myself, it would be the first outbound cricket tour which the team would embark on. Touring India would mean so much to my spiritual mind, because India is a really vibrant place when it comes to your spiritual well-being, and the culture is one to behold.

Daniel Dixon:

2017 Season:

2017 was an amazing season and for the size of our school, we did incredibly well. It was a real disappointment when we couldn't play the final as I feel we would've won it, but there is always next year. Our team spirit was awesome and we have an amazing drive as a team which makes us, in my view, one of the best teams in Limpopo.

INDIA 2019

I feel that going to India is going to show how good we are and test us to our limits, but also help us open our eyes to the world around us. I can't wait for the tour and we will make sure India remembers our cricket team.

Kutlwano (Shorty) Moagi:

2017 Season:

2017 surprised me! I was initiated to bowl for the first time in a cricket match of that magnitude it was overwhelming. I surely did it with maturity and composure as I gathered wickets for the team. Batting on the other hand was terrifying, but I knew that this was the time I had to show my passion and dedication to cricket and I certainly did with classy shots and made crucial runs. But it wasn’t about me, it was about us as a team pushing each other to do well and encouraging one another. It really showed maturity from a squad that is made up of mostly juniors. I was proud to be us, walking onto that field with belief, pure dedication and a hunger to win. We went far and we got to the finals that we were unable to play, but we can call ourselves champions, because we had a burning desire to show the world what we, Southern Cross Cricketers are made of...We exceeded expectations!!

INDIA 2019

This tour would mean a lot to me, because I’ve always wanted to tour internationally, really go out there and be a representative of our diverse school. What is overwhelming about this is that we are going to a cricket loving country and playing in front of a crowd that is potentially huge.It is going to be so satisfying being able to showcase our hard work and passion. Being able to entertain people is the gratifying factor. This is really huge for us and I encourage us to be pumped up and ready because, BOYS, we are taking on India!!The tour would mean so much for me and us as a team, because it would place us on the map as a small team from a small little town, we would make history. What is important to me is that we are taking this on as a team, one that is passionate. This tour is going to stay forever burning in my heart and it is going to mean more to me that I’m spending it with a team like us.
