The idea of creating ‘Sounds for Hope’ came after receiving a desperate message from a friend volunteering in a refugee camp on the Slovenian border. We gathered together in order to brainstorm ideas of how we could possibly engage the students of Groningen to support the refugees. We decided to combine raising awareness about the situation with a charity concert of local acoustic artists, speakers and a photography exhibition. This crowdfunding page is for the people who don’t have the opportunity to attend the event but still would like to help.
So why should we help?
It is 21st century Europe, and thousands of refugees do not have access to food, water or warm clothing to survive the European winter.
After escaping their war-torn countries, leaving their families behind and travelling the rough seas to Europe, they encountered nothing but hostility and are still struggling to survive. Due to the political choice to try and prevent any more refugees coming to Europe, the camps are often in dire and squalid conditions.
But how can we help?
Having spoken to friends volunteering in these camps, I know that literally every little bit helps. Handing over a bottle of water to a refugee is not just going to quench their thirst, but give them hope that there are people here that care. When my friend was no longer allowed access inside the camps, they told me how they just stood on the other side of the fence and waved at anyone who looked at them. They told me how they saw the desperate and sad faces of these people transform into a smile of love and hope.
1 euro, 2 euros, 50 euros, it all helps and the receiver will be forever grateful.
Please donate and share this page as together we can make a big difference.
Money will be sent to ‘Are You Syrious’, a front-line organization working in the refugee camps in Southern-Europe. This charity was chosen because it is very well connected in the Southern European region, meaning funds are distributed according to which region needs it most. They also have very low administrative costs meaning most of the money is spent on what is actually needed: food, water and warm clothing.
