Campaign Story
Dear friends and admirers of Soqotra, our Soqotri friends are requesting our urgent help.
Thousands of Soqotris are currently living without shelter, clean water or basic essentials.
After months of hardship due to ongoing warfare on the mainland the Soqotra Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique biodiversity, has been hit by two powerful, unprecedented cyclones within the space of a week.
Cyclone Chapala hit on 1st November, reaching gusts of 232km (144 miles) per hour. It dropped a decade of average annual rainfall in just two days.
Cyclone Megh, hitting on 8th November, was even stronger.
The cyclones have caused human casualities, countless injuries, displaced thousands of people and damaged and destroyed thousands of buildings including homes, hospitals and schools.
Shortages of food and safe drinking water are expected and the onset of disease is feared.
Electricity is down in many areas. There is widespread flooding and destruction and the situation for the Soqotri people is dire.
The Friends of Soqotra (FoS) is urgently raising funds for humanitarian aid and (at a later date) ecological restoration. All funds raised through this site will be transferred directly to Friends of Soqotra.
Funds will be allocated to the most needy, following the close advice of Socotri friends on the ground with logistical support of the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The Friends of Soqotra, a charity registered in the UK, is a community of scientists, researchers, development workers and travellers interested in the Soqotra Archipelago http://www.friendsofsoqotra.org/.
FOS was established to promote the sustainable use and conservation of the natural environment of the Soqotra Archipelago, and to support sustainable improvement in the standard of living of its people.
Donations can also be made direct to the Friends of Soqotra via Paypal http://www.friendsofsoqotra.org/About/Membership.h...
Please give whatever you can. Everything helps.
Thank you.
