Soqotra needs our help

Update posted by Lisa Banfield On Jan 27, 2016

Dear Friends of Soqotra donors.

We are very happy to say that our fundraiser to help the Soqotri people has far exceeded our first goal. We raised more than $14,000 in total. We have now closed the fundraiser to concentrate on distributing the funds to the most needy causes. We will continue to post updates on how your contributions have been spent. Thank you all so much for your support.

Dear Friends,

To date FoS has raised over 6000 GBP in total for the campaign to provide relief to the Soqotra Archipelago following the two devastating cyclones that hit on 1st and 8th of November.

Our man on the ground Ismael Mohamed has just returned from the remote island of Samha where aid has just reached for the first time. This small fishing community of a few hundred people had lost houses and, perhaps more importantly, many boats.

Along with a cargo of food and other provisions from large relief efforts, FoS sent a Soqotri mechanic with resources to repair the vital fishing boats. A total of 14 fishing boats, each taking up to a day of work, were repaired and made seaworthy again.

Small donations were also made to people with the worse damage to their houses and loss of other provisions.

The people of Samha are now able to rebuild and recover their independence following the devastating cyclones.

A big thank you again to all of you who have donated and made this possible. There are more villages who need similar help and we want to help as many as possible. Please continue to support and share our fundraiser.

Dear Supporters,

We are overwhelmed to have reached our initial target of $5000 and our first donation has already reached the island. Our target has been raised to $8000.

News is beginning to arrive from the outer islands of Samha and Abd al Kuri. 129 families from Abd al Kuri, 656 people in all, fled to the main island having abandoned their island. They report that their island is totally destroyed, all roofs collapsed and no house left suitable to live in.

Further pictures show the extent of the damage to the dragon's blood and frankincense/Boswellia woodland in Homhil.

Mosquito outbreaks are beginning to appear creating a need for mosquito nets.

Lets continue to do our best to help the people as much as we can.

Many Thanks.

Lisa Banfield, on behalf of Friends of Soqotra
