Songsang Studios is the first queer female and non-binary led YouTube channel in Malaysia.

Positive representation of LGBTQIA experiences is prohibited in mainstream media in Malaysia therefore grassroots, independent, content creation is essential to give voice to this marginalised group and advocate for equal legal protection.

This project builds the filmmaking capacity for LGBTQIA people to tell their own stories, challenging the homophobic and transphobic status quo in the region, through producing hybrid tutorials and publicly available online content.

In 2020 the successful pilot project produced 4 episodes covering housing, police power, employment and enterprise (funded by the Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies).

In 2021, this project will see the participants from the pilot take on leadership and mentoring roles to train the next generation of film makers.

Through developing the capacity of LGBTQIA people to work together to produce their own media, Songsang Studios will have a long term impact on media freedom and human rights, nationally and regionally.
