Blind Couple From Zejtun Robbed Of Their Life Savings By Scammer
Mario Farrugia and Therese Micallef, a blind couple from Żejtun, had the fright of their life last Thursday around 11.30am when they were robbed of all their life savings by an orange-clad robber. As reported on One News, the robber told them that he was there to collect back payments for electricity bills.
“I couldn’t catch up with him since I’m blind, so we started shouting for help and crying.”
“We were saving up money for our own funeral, but it was all taken from us.” Farrugia said. The robber took the hefty amount of €3,050 from the couple’s home. He went as far as telling Mario Farrugia that he had to pay him €50 for his services, or else they would risk getting their electricity shut down. The scammer even gave a receipt to his victims and a fake mobile number.
At one point the robber’s phone rang — when Farrugia asked him if it was from the electricity company, the robber told him that it’s his boss, however Farrugia claims that it was his accomplice asking whether or not he got into their home.
After Farrugia gave him the money, the guy opened up the drawer where the couple kept their savings. Farrugia did not notice this at first, but he did hear the money box snap as it closed — giving away the robber.
The victim tried to catch the robber as he made a run for it, but could not run properly due to his impairment. “I couldn’t catch up with him since I’m blind, so we started shouting for help and crying.” he said.
Mario Farrugia called the electricity company to report what happened, and they in turn told him that they did not send anyone over to collect money and that in fact, they had no payments due.
