Sisu Guatemala – handmade products by inmates

Está iniciativa comenzó en septiembre del 2018, conociendo la situación de las cárceles en Guatemala, la situación de los privados de libertad, lo que sufren ellos y sus familias, no sólo por el encarcelamiento, sino por problemas económicos que derivan de ellos. Notamos que algunos hacen productos a mano para ganar algo de dinero para ellos y sus familias. Así que, empezamos a diseñar nuevos productos, los pusimos en redes sociales a la venta y empezamos a invitar a más personas, diseñadores y emprendedores a unirse al proyecto.

Nuestros primeros productos fueron playeras y bolsas de manta bordadas. Hemos estado trabajando los productos y diseños bajo pedido. Ahora estamos buscando hacer más y diferentes productos, para poder ayudar a más privados de libertad en diferentes cárceles del país. Necesitamos poder mantener un stock de productos y venderlos en diferentes tiendas, así como en nuestra página web que estamos por lanzar. La única manera de hacerlo, es tener más dinero para hacer más diseños, comprar materiales, enseñarles a los privados de libertad como trabajar cada diseño y pagarles, para poder vender esos productos en línea y diferentes tiendas.

También esperamos realizar con estas personas actividades recreacionales y diferentes talleres, por lo que necesitamos tener un fondo para poder organizar las mismas.

Queremos hacer una diferencia en nuestro país, queremos ayudar sin prejuicios, darle a conocer a la gente lo que hacemos y acabar con el estigma social. En septiembre cumplimos un año de haber iniciado y esperamos poder dar el paso y hacer de Sisu un proyecto más grande.

We started this initiative in september 2018, knowing the status of jails in Guatemala, how inmates live and suffer, as well as their families, not only from incarceration, but also economic problems derived from it. We noticed some already did some handmade products to gain some money for them and their families. So, we started designing new products, got on social media to sell those products and are inviting more people, designers and entrepeneurs to join the project.

Our first products were embroidered t-shirts and tote bags. We have beed working our products and designs by request. Now we're looking forward to making more and different products, to be able to help more inmates in different prisons in Guatemala. We need to be able to have a stock and sell some of the products on different stores and also our website, in which we are already working to lauch soon. The only way to do that, is to have more money to make more designs, buy the materials, teach the inmates how to work on the designs and pay pay them, to get those products online and to different retail stores.

We also hope we're able to organize different recreational activities and workshops for them, so we need to have a fund to plan and make them happen.

We want to make a difference in our country, we want to help without prejudice, to get people to know what we do and end the social stigma. In september our initiative turns one year and we hope we can make Sisu a bigger project.
