Campaign Story
Are you my friend, a colleague, an acquaintance? Are you simply a person with a good heart who just wants to help out? This call to action is meant for you.
EDIT (02/01/2020): My good friends from Sisak area have joined the campaign and will help establish a direct channel to people affected by this disaster. Andrea, Monika, Ivona, Stipo and myself will identify people who suffered from this tragedy, and we will make sure that the funds go directly to people in need.
We will post updates as we move forward with our efforts.
What happened?
On the 29th of December, my country was hit by a devastating earthquake of 6.4 magnitude. Its effects were felt by over 6 000 000 people in the region. Its aftermath is devastating.
The epicentre was just 7 miles (10 kilometres) away from my hometown Sisak.
This part of Croatia is an underdeveloped region where most of the buildings are 100+ years old.
Infrastructure has been improved in recent decades, however, it was not ready for such a disaster.
On top of that, this region was heavily battered by war, which ended only 25 years ago.
Sisak's economy is close to non-existent. People are moving away, and I myself am a part of its negative migration statistic, for now.
This soulful ex-Roman city with a rich history and wonderful people is in danger of fading away in a few decades.
What happened on December 29th could be a final nail in the coffin of this tormented nation, worn down by the need to rebuild its society every few decades.
Who am I?
- I am Danijel.
- I am a 32-year-old homesick IT professional, who currently works in the United Kingdom.
- I was born in Sisak, in the hospital that was destroyed by the earthquake.
- I am a kayaker who learned how to row under Sisak's "Old bridge" which is now heavily damaged.
- I am a skater, who had first scraped knees next to my High School, which suffered structural damage.
- I am a biker who spent every day riding the streets of Sisak, now filled with bricks and broken roofs.
- I was an ambitious but financially challenged student, and my city has supported me many times.
- I am a person who wants to give back to my city and help rebuild its infrastructure.
- I currently live in the United Kingdom, but I am from Sisak, through and through.
Why am I starting this campaign?
Thousands of people are coming together and saving human life, cleaning the city and rebuilding it. They are there physically - I am not able to join them. I want to help even though I am thousands of miles away.
I want to do something more than just send my thoughts and prayers.
I want to do something more than just watch the news and stay in touch.
I want to help financially on a larger scale, and help rebuild my hometown's infrastructure.
I want to help the people of Sisak.
Yes, the EU will eventually help.
Yes, the government will eventually help.
Yes, the help will come, eventually.
People of Sisak need help now, and lots of it.
Where will the money go?
Every penny/cent/lipa gathered by this emergency fund relief will go towards rebuilding the hospital, schools, homes.
It will buy food, water and medicine.
It will go to well-known and verified institutions which are rebuilding the city.
It will go to trustworthy organizations or people who directly work with the people in need.
100% of it will be forwarded after the campaign ends in 2 weeks.
I will not keep a dime.
What is in the global news?
CNN: It is the largest quake to hit Croatia
BBC: Rescuers search rubble for survivors
Al Jazeera: Buildings in central Croatia collapse

Campaign results - where did your contributions go?
Update posted by Danijel Dadovic at 11:57 amAs promised, we made sure that every cent/penny/lipa went directly to people and organisations we thoroughly researched. To protect the dignity of victims of this disaster, I kept them anonymous in this update as well as the exact sums that went to them. I purposely named organisations we helped out,. . . . .
