Background 背景

For millions of years, mankind has benefited from bees. As one of the major pollinators of the natural world, bees help to provide the 90% of global nutrition. Not only that, bees help to keep a balanced ecosystem that ensures the continued survival of flora and fauna as well.

For the last 10 years, bee populations have been steadily declining at an alarming rate. Millions of bees are killed due to the increasing use of pesticides as well as the non-discriminatory killing of bees.

To prevent this devastation of epidemic proportions, people all over the world are working tirelessly to increase awareness to prevent the demise of bees.

Singapore's Bees

Singapore is a small country with a very strong economic focus in banking, industrial services, and even IT. Agriculture, however, is not a main focus. As a result, less emphasis is placed on the conservation of natural pollinators such as bees.

The general misconception of bees in Singapore is that they are dangerous pests that would sting you without provocation. Bees are lumped together in the category of wasps, ants, and other such pests. Thus, pesticides become the easy way out for the removal of bees. However, this cannot be further from the truth. Bees are generally harmless creatures that are only trying to forage for food for the colony. The only time a bee would sting somebody is if it feels threatened. Moreover, bees ultimately die if they sting humans, due to the fact that the stinger gets stuck inside human skin, so the bees really have no good incentive to go around stinging people.

Sadly, in Singapore alone, an estimated 1,000,000 bees are killed each year under government pest control services. This staggering number is only a conservative estimate, with actual numbers likely to be three times of that.

Aim

In order to increase awareness on the importance of our local pollinators, we are organizing a special event to provide an opportunity for participants to learn about and experience being around the bees.

We are aiming to hold this event in conjunction with the World Bee Day on the 20th of May.

To make this event successful, we plan to upgrade our bee garden to facilitate the participation of visitors in a meaningful way.

Some of the upgrades include
  1. Redeveloping the current eco-bee garden, including the upgrading of hives.
  2. Increasing the security of our existing hives.
  3. Curating a better experience for our guests.

The event will require tents, food and drinks for the participants, as well as other logistical needs that will arise on the day itself.

So far, the main source of funds has been our own pockets. Thus, your donations would help us ensure the success of the above, as well as to further the goal of educating the public on the importance of bees, as well as to debunk any misconceptions that people have on bees.

If you feel strongly about this cause and would like to help us, please support us on this campaign by clicking on the 'Donate' button. Thank you.

  • Kudos to what you are doing....it's very meaningful. If you can organise a half day show and tell for a group of say 20 people, I'll organise the fathers in my church to bring their children...teach the next generation. God bless your work.
