Overview

Separate Sights is a short film that delves into the concept of this creative light within our human experience, that holds this depth of emotional authenticity. Exploring the outcome of expressing this inner light conflicted with those who choose to bury it. A story about loneliness, acceptance and re-discovering the wonderful dream-like adventure of a child's imagination.

STORY

On the bridge between reality and imagination a young boy runs off to the open landscapes of his fantasy worlds. Escaping the troubles of home and the clutches of his controlling mother, who simply wants to save her son from his hasty actions.

Caught in the act the boy faces a new challenge when a girl discovers him and persuades to let her join his fantastical adventures. Testing her trust the boy fears, once she's let in she won't want to stay.

Meanwhile, back home the mother faces chaos with her husband and comes to the realization that her perfect family life has now become a pipe dream. Taking one last attempt to preserve the little connection she has with her boy, who just wants to be let free.

CHARACTERS

Leads

Scotty - The boy. Energetic and powerfully imaginative. His creative vision to make fantasy worlds and characters from his head allow him to escape the troubles of his home life and avoid the controlling nature of his mother. Most often alone in his world the character's he creates and bonds with grant him to to see aspect of others that they can't see themselves.

Skyla - The mother. Anxious and proper. Longing for her perfect family life she tries many times to keep her son safe and sheltered while also in conflict with her husband about the impact he has on their family. Constantly worried and confused by her son's sporadic behavior she makes herself responsible for "helping" Scotty, who doesn't want to be.

Supporting

Charlotte - The girl. Curious and playful. Takes an interest in Scotty's fantasy worlds and persuades him to let join on his adventures with his imaginary crew. Finds the fun in playing make believe simply to have her boring life filled with some excitement. What she finds with Scotty however maybe more than what she bargained for.

Ben - The husband. Lazy and apathetic. The stress of raising a family got the best of him. Recovering from an alcohol obsession he works a routine job as a construction worker being pushed away from his family. Until he discovers a secret that Skyla has been hiding from him.

STYLE

Deeply inspired by eastern animations, Separate Sights captures the dream like essence of a fantasy with use of natural light. Emphasizing the natural glow of the sun giving warmth to the environments.

This concept of using the natural light of the sun will be most used to resemble this glow within us human bringing us to our truer selves. Which takes it's strongest moments in the open spaces of the boy's imagination and it's lowest around the house where the chaos of family occurs. Through this expression we see this conflict between the external and internal experiences of the characters.

This conflict of experience will also be expressed through movement of the camera. Creating a smooth and stable movements in the boy's imaginary worlds creating a sense of comfort, and having quick motions shifting around the house to feel the unstable tension of the family. All from the perspective of the boy.

Symbolism will be a main contributor to expressing the theme throughout the film. Using the emotional influence of color to show the present state that the characters experience. To achieve this, the house will be covered in a dry pale color filled with trinkets giving this sense of emptiness. Where as the boy's dream lands will be filled with colorful surroundings to explore the sense of freedom.

REASON

As a kid I assumed that imagination was similar to a toy that could be played with. While still growing up and experiencing the bitter fruits of life, it passed by that this toy could also be a type of super power.

The ability to express this vulnerable creative center in all of us and let it's light shine, showing the truest part of our human being. What would happen to us? How would others react? Does this expression take it's powerful state when we imagine ourselves away from the chaos of life?

These conflicts of the human condition are what this film is meant to share. Sent as a message for those to let that light within you come alive and become you true creative self.
