Campaign Story
This is our super sweet Sierra. Unfortunately Sierra was born with mega esophagus For anyone who is not familiar with mega e, as we weren't before Sierra, her esophagus does not direct food into her stomach as it should and she can not drink any water. This means she needs to be supervised and fed a special diet in smaller amounts throughout the day while in an upright position and then stay in that position for at least 15 minutes afterwards, but we do 30 or more to attempt to avoid any problems. By problems I mean that food will stay in her esophagus until she vomits and water can find its way into her lungs.
Although Sierra has been a blessing to our family, it comes at a price. Sierra requires special critical nutrition dog food, medication twice a day and visits to the vet. Caring for a mega e dog takes a lot of time and effort, but it is worth it. We have done whatever we need to do for her up to this point and will continue to do so. Along with caring for our mega e girl we will also be trying to raise awareness of mega esophagus. We had taken Sierra to 3 local veterinarians, includung late night trips to an emergency vet clinic, before we finally found the right one and were able to get a diagnosis. After Sierra was diagnosed we shared what we had learned with the other vets and they seemed offended, which was not our intention. We simply wanted to possibly help the next dog that came to them with the same symptoms. We were able to get a lot of information from Sierra's attending vet and also online, but still feel not enough people know about mega e.
