I live in a 55+ apartment building that has many tenants with mobility issues due to age.
Many of them use Handy Transit and are left to wait one to one and three quarter hours for a return pick up. With winter just around the corner, many of them will be wearing their winter clothing which is not easy for them to remove causing their bodies to overheat while they wait for their return ride.
When they use the service for shopping they are limited to the amount of bags they can take home on handy transit requiring them to make numerous trips to the same store on different days. This becomes very tiring for some of them.
Some seniors in my building do not qualify for Handy transit and have to walk to the nearest bus stop which is 2-3 city blocks away. In the winter with our slippery sidewalks this can be very difficult and dangerous for them.
The funds will be used to purchase a 5-7 passenger vehicle with a compartment that will easily carry a large number of grocery bags to take the seniors in my building shopping.
I volunteer my time to run a number of events such as Barbecues in the summer, Halloween parties and Christmas decorating and any other events that benefit the seniors in my building. Supplies that I pick up for these events on many occasions are so numerous that I have to take a taxi home which I pay for out of my personal funds.
