Help us bring you great festivals without bending to corporate sponsorship. We are here to support local businesses and need your donations to help continue to bring you great events for free. Please read below for the planned festival for this June. Thank you!

Around the world from New York to London to Tokyo to Johannesburg for many years there has been a reoccurring festival celebrating Shakespeare and the platform of theatre in general called “Shakespeare in the Park.” An extremely successful and popular event placing theatre in an open-air location mainly in parks, providing an opportunity for all people to enjoy the possibilities of theatre but in a less pretentious and welcoming atmosphere.  We aim to do something similar for the first time in Bulgaria this June – but with our own unique twists and improvements to the idea, so we have not Shakespeare in the Park but “ShakesBEER” in the Park.

With the success of our last event in Doktorskata Gradina for the RTM + Beer Festival last September, it became clear that people here have an extreme interest in high-quality culinary products such as independent micro-breweries and imported beers which promote a dedication to the art of beer making as well as responsible attitudes towards the environment and consumers.  People also showed great appreciation and enthusiasm for the unique variety of excellent foods being prepared at numerous small independent restaurants around the city, a few of which were represented there – we aim to expose once again these positive aspects of the culinary culture often ignored in favor of cheaply made and mass produced products.

Last September we accomplished this exposure through the medium of music and minimal design which contributed to an amazing and unforgettable atmosphere.  This time we plan to create a lasting memory in people’s minds through independent theatre production, providing a unique opportunity for everybody to enjoy this art form in a relaxed, sociable and positive atmosphere not to mention absolutely free.
In addition to theatre, food and drink there will also be an area for yard games away from the stage where people can relax by playing some interactive games with friends – old and new. If yard games are not to an individual’s preference there will also be intellectual games available for people to borrow as well as such things as table football.

Besides the activities and foods an important element is design.  People will be able to watch the performances in the comfort of the park nurturing the more social and relaxed feel of the event.  Certain artists will also contribute to the area’s design with special installations even including the design of the food and drink stalls as well as lighting.

The performances will be performed by local acting troupes. The performances will of course include Shakespeare, but we will also have an American play.  Our goal is to have three performances during the one day event which would begin in the early afternoon and coming to a close in the evening at 21.30. The day-long event will be perforated with intervals to allow festival goers to explore and enjoy the other aspects of the event as well as just socializing on the grass. We have also invited a couple of musical groups to perform live music in the intervals of the plays which will keep the festival moving and entertaining throughout.

There is a planned screening of a film from the Sofia International Film Festival to take place as well!

16:30 – 18:00 – Play “The Merry Wives of Windsor” a comedy by William ShakespeareFirst published in 1602 and featuring the fat knight Sir John Falstaf the play focuses on love and marriage, jealousy and revenge, social class and wealth. Explored with irony, sexual innuendo, sarcasm, and stereotypical views of classes and nationalities, these themes help to give the play something closer to a modern-day view than is often found in Shakespeare's plays.
