Hi dear friends!

We are excited to announce that we’ve created a GoFundMe campaign so you can help us to carry on with our missions in 2021.

Protecting our environment is vital to ensure our future as a species. The Arctic ecosystems are the ones facing the most dramatic transformation due to climate change. Additionally, the problems of plastic pollution, wildlife entanglements and more are compromising our oceans´ health and its biodiversity. Ocean Missions non-profit organization was created in Húsavík (Iceland), at the edge of the Arctic, in order to bring visibility to these problems and to work together with stakeholders to find solutions to these issues.

The main goal is to collect enough environmental data to monitor plastic pollution, and bird and whale biodiversity in the most remote areas of Iceland. In addition, this information would help to inspire people to act for the oceans and ultimately aid in developing a strategic plan to make Skjálfandi Bay, in Húsavík, a “Marine Sanctuary” where threatened species, like blue whales and puffins, will be protected and where eco-tourism would thrive. For that purpose, we need to increase our efforts on scientific data collection and education in Iceland!

Our plan for 2021 is to encourage environmentalism and ocean protection by inspiring the local communities, particularly young generations, stakeholders and tourists. To achieve this target, we would love to build a small, open MiniLab. This platform will be equipped with a microscope to look at collected samples and informative signs so people can check out interesting finding of our sailing expeditions and learn key facts about the oceans. Our philosophy is to achieve these environmental targets by education, science, eco-tourism and dissemination of information.

Your donations will be dedicated to:

1) Buying supplies such as scientific equipment and audiovisual material used for field work during the expeditions.

2) Building and opening a MiniLab in Húsavík for education and awareness (for locals and tourists).

3) Building ring nets with partially recycled materials to provide to whale watching and fishing boat operators to catch and remove floating plastics and debris from the sea.

4) Expanding our beach clean-up activities and creating an online platform for data entry, visualization effort and further participation.

5) Arranging events, workshops and extra educational sailing activities for the summer season.

Please feel free to share this post and encourage your own friends to donate and help to build the MiniLab. Every little help counts! Thank you in advance for your generosity!
