The Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College is sponsoring its first faculty-led trip to Turkey for the Summer of 2013!
Students will engage in a holistic program that focuses on the humanities, religion, history, and writing. The students will take 2-3 classes and travel to Turkey as a part of the program for three weeks where they will visit Istanbul, Ankara, Konya, and the Mediterranean Coast. The goal of the program is to take students through a journey that is both academic and personal. Students will blog/vlog about their experiences as a part of the prorgam and engage in service learning where they discuss their experiences studying abroad. Assignments are focused on journaling about themes related to social justice, the historical perspective, and the role of religion in society.
Study abroad isn't often available to community college students. Many students work full-time and support families while they study. Funding for study abroad is often difficult to come by. However, study abroad is one of the most important experiences a student can engage in during the undergraduate experience. Studies have shown that the benefits of study abroad, beyond the obvious reasons of seeing the world and experiencing other cultures, is that students who study abroad often have improved GPAs, a more vested interest in their education, increased understanding of themselves, and their personal heritage, culture, and values. These types of experiences lead to better global citizens.
Our cohort of 12 students are eager for this opportunity, but would be unable to go without financial support. We need your help to raise the funds for our diverse group of students. We have future doctors, writers and engineers in our midst. With your support, we'll be able to build a stronger program that is accessible to other students on the campus who are interested in studying abroad.
All of our donors will receive access to the student blogs and vlogs and will be able to follow the students on their travels. Donors who contribute $100 or more will be invited to our study abroad banquet in the Fall of 2013, and will receive special mention for their efforts.
