So my intern Syaqil has the rare opportunity to go to COP24 as part of the organisation Malaysian Youth Delegation. The trouble is, their sponsors have pulled out at the last minute and now they're in a bit of a financial pickle. So here I am being a good (albeit poor) boss and trying to reach out to you lovely people to help him get to COP24 to get the necessary skills to become the next climate warrior.

Here's his story:

---------------------------------------------

I'm Syaqil, a fresh environmental science graduate, and I'm part of what's called the Malaysian Youth Delegation (MYD). We're a youth NGO that focuses on the climate change movement within Malaysia and one of our main outcomes is to send a delegation to the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly known as COP. We have been doing this since 2015, and this year isn't any different as we plan to send a delegation to Poland for the 24th annual Conference.

Last year, I was privileged enough to have been partially sponsored by my university in facilitating my journey to the conference. Having graduated this year, I am no longer eligible for such sponsorship, and have recently learned that such funding from the university for COP has stopped indefinitely.

The reason why it's important for us to go to COP is because such conferences, with regards to youths at least, are dominated by those from the Global North (developed) countries. The need for a bigger representation of youths from the developing Global South countries (like Malaysia) is imperative. It is now, more than ever, necessary that we have our voices heard on the international stage.

Also, to be able to attend COP as part of MYD again would be a huge honour, as I would be able to continue to do my part in carrying the legacy of Malaysian youths who want to fight against climate change.

It would mean the world to me should you choose to support our cause. For all the things that I've mentioned that are meaningful to me, know that your are the drivers behind a youth's desire to not only give back to society, but fight for an equitable and just climate future.
