What Makes My Project Important:

The world's future is in my generation's hands. People to People is a program that President Dwight D. Eisenhower began in 1956 as a peaceful solution in our war-filled world. His vision was to give everyday citizens in different countries opportunities to get to know each other, hoping that through this the result would be understanding, friendship and lasting peace. People to People Ambassador Programs are meant to break down cultural barriers by providing travel opportunities for student delegates, led by experienced teachers. I have a wonderful opportunity to become part
of this movement towards cultural understanding and peace.

Places I Will Go:

DAY-1 DEPART FOR BARCELONA, SPAIN

Leave the U.S. for Barcelona and start your Mediterranean holiday.

DAY-2 SEE BARCELONA’S ARTISTIC HERITAGE

Welcome to Europe! Arrive in Barcelona, and meet your delegation manager at the airport. This local expert will be your guide (and a source of endless information) for the entire journey. Your delegation will also have a private motor coach and driver to get you comfortably from place to place.

In Barcelona, explore the work of Antoni Gaudi, Spain’s most famous—and most unique—architect. See Gaudi’s masterpiece in progress, La Sagrada Familia Cathedral—it’s been under construction since 1882 and is still not complete!

Learn how to cook the delicious Spanish rice dish, paella, and discover why it has traditionally been eaten on Sundays in the fall.

DAY-3 DIVE INTO SPAIN’S HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

This morning you will have time for some shopping in this great city. Stroll along Barcelona’s buzzing pedestrian zone, the Rambla, and visit EI Corte Ingles or Las Arenas, the city’s biggest department stores.

In the afternoon you’ll have the opportunity to go ice skating on Barcelona’s main square, the Plaza Catalunya. When you consider that this is Europe’s largest ice rink, it’s set in the park-like city center, and it’s open only a few weeks per year, you’ll realize this is an incredible opportunity!

Experience Spain’s unique cultural gifts over a dinner of authentic cuisine and a flamenco show this evening. Flamenco dance has roots in many cultures—including India, Morocco, and the Caribbean—but it’s come to represent Spain itself, with its dramatic music, boldly colored costumes, and powerful movements.

Take a nighttime walk through one of the city’s colorful Christmas markets. At this time, Barcelonans will still be looking forward to the Feast of the Three Kings, when families bake cakes with a figure of a king hidden inside for luck. You may want to bring home a toy king to start your own Spanish tradition at home!

DAY-4 SOAK IN THE MEDITERRANEAN’S WINTER SUN

Head just a few miles down the road to Castelldefels. This seaside town is a popular holiday destination for Barcelona’s residents because of its miles of fabulous sandy beaches. Go to the beach to kick back or to play some soccer or volleyball on the warm sand.

Travel to Perpignan, France, a small city in the Pyrenees Mountains that boasts remnants of both French and Spanish rule. Walk with your guide through the city center to appreciate the medieval towers, town hall, and the richly decorated Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

Make your way to Narbonne, where you’ll spend the night.

DAY-5 REVEL IN THE FRENCH RIVIERA

Travel to the French Riviera, and explore Nice, the capital of the Cote d’Azur (or Blue Coast), with an expert guide. Discover Nice’s coastline promenade, sparkling blue waters, and beautiful Old Town.

Then enter the tiny country of Monaco—famous for its royal Grimaldi family and its Grand Prix auto race. See the streets that transform into a racetrack each year and learn about this unique country—which occupies an area smaller than that of New York's Central Park!

Browse Monaco’s swanky stores, and take in the views of villas, gardens, and yachts in this wealthy resort nation.

Return to Nice to stroll its romantic Christmas market. Here you can walk through snow-flocked trees while enjoying ocean breezes in the city’s central square, the Place Messena.

DAY-6 RING IN AN ITALIAN NEW YEAR

Discover inspiring Romanesque architecture today in the Italian city of Pisa. See the Leaning Tower for yourself after walking across the Square of Miracles.

Today, you’ll understand the importance of your role as an international Ambassador. Receive an official welcome from a town representative and gain insights into the local community in Montecatini. This is a very special opportunity available only to Student Ambassadors.

Make new friends and experience some new holiday customs when you celebrate New Year’s Eve with local residents. Savor an authentic Italian meal, then dance your way into the New Year at a private party.

DAY-7 TOSS A TRUE TUSCAN PIZZA

Explore the city of Florence this morning, where you'll pass by the Duomo and the bronze doors of the Baptistery, known as the Gate to Paradise.

Outside the church of Santa Croce, you’ll discover a Christmas market with a German flavor.

Watch a pizza-making demonstration, then make and eat your own pizza—the Tuscan way!—at an Italian fattoria, or farm. Buon appetito!

DAY-8 MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE ETERNAL CITY

Rome’s most noteworthy highlights are waiting for you! Begin your journey in the ancient Roman Colosseum. Walk in footsteps of ancient gladiators—and imagine the spectators who came to watch—in this historic place. Explore the nearby ruins at the Roman Forum, as well, as you think about just how long Rome has existed.

Get into the true spirit of the holidays when you help bake cookies for a homeless shelter. Work alongside local citizens to leave a lasting impact—and a great impression of Americans!

After dinner, have fun at the sparkling Christmas Market on Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most beautiful squares. Ride a carousel, share a giant ciambelle doughnut with your friends, and learn the legend of La Befana, the witch-looking character who fills the stockings of Italian children.

DAY-9 STAND IN AWE OF THE SISTINE CHAPEL

Later, visit the world’s smallest country—the Vatican! Wonder at the artistry of the frescos of the Sistine Chapel and see for yourself the scale of St. Peter's Basilica. Explore the Vatican Museums for even more insight.

In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to explore the stores in one of the world’s greatest shopping cities! Stroll along the Corso where you will find some of the world’s most famous brands and visit Rome’s oldest market on Campo de’Fiori.

As the journey comes to an end, you won’t want to leave the Ambassadors who have become your new best friends. Relive your favorite memories from your European holiday at a farewell party tonight.

DAY-10 RETURN HOME

Head to the airport and board your flight to the U.S.
