Seeking funding for a Certificate Training Program. The goal of the programs proposed is to:
- Prepare the next generation of diverse scholars and academic leaders and meets the Higher Education objective of facilitating and nurturing trans-disciplinary and trans-national research and training
- The right certification programs could help military veterans transition into the workforce faster
Strong academic leadership is the cornerstone for a successful institution, and strength comes from training as well as experience. In higher education, often times specific training does not occur or has not occurred when a leader is chosen; rather it is based upon seniority or the “old boys network”, as can be clearly seen in the case of Community Colleges.
When servicemembers transition out of the military, they enter the civilian world with transferable skills and valuable experience, but oftentimes have trouble securing a civilian job. Many jobs still require a degree. Professional certifications are needed to help get transitioning servicemembers into the workforce faster.
In the newer very vibrant non-traditional education market, leaders are now dealing with problems such as older first time students and military veterans with PTSD who are recently separated from their branch of service, and these leaders are not receiving any formal training for the job they are doing. The kind of leadership needed for this 21st century arena is different because the old way of simply promoting based upon seniority has not proven to be successful in the long term. Anupgrade in tools and training is needed.
A leadership certification for example, would give the much needed specific knowledge of four key areas to educational leaders. These key areas are training that new leader’s do not consistently because most institutions do not have this available for them. It will provide stability, reduce turnover of positions because leaders are being given tools to succeed and are not feeling overwhelmed, and it can build a network between schools and make the atmosphere more collaborative rather than competitive. It should be noted that there are no external programs that exist in the industry either.
A proposed four course plus one project for the leadership certification would be:
- Higher Education Leadership
- Human Resources Management
- Education Law and Ethics
- Strategic Planning
The networking potential should not be underestimated because with a minimum cohort of 5 students different schools, will expand their individual networks. It is further proposed that this course run 4 times a year (once a quarter) unless the need changes
$1000 for development $470 per week for instructor $256 per week for TA $3630 plus 4 hours prep and grading time per week for instructor $188 Total $3818 per course (4 to 5 weeks)
Total $15275 per certificate course
(Laptops dedicated to certificate programs with full word software and audio video software such as Vimeo, and webex conferencing software)
