Hello! We’re Secretive Thing and this year we’ve been invited to represent Singapore at the prestigious Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space from 8-18 June 2023!

We’ve curated four Singaporean works for our exhibition ‘Renewed Vision’ which responds to PQ’s 2023 theme – RARE; in the sense of unique and raw realities that artists create. Each work was originally created and presented during the pandemic in Singapore when arts events were limited and could only take place under strict restrictions. These artists took the restrictions placed upon them, and innovated – turning these restrictions into challenges to overcome as part of their artistic endeavours.

We’re looking to raise S$2500 to supplement our funding from the National Arts Council – taking a full-scale exhibition to Europe is an expensive endeavour but with your help we’ll be able to get there!
  • S$1500 will go towards set construction – this extra money allows us to add on a few design elements to elevate our exhibition! Think of it as helping us put on the bells and whistles to stand out from the 50 other countries being represented!
  • S$500 goes towards renting technical equipment – this includes TV screens, speakers and other equipment that’s too bulky to bring from Singapore. Renting in Prague enables us to be more cost-effective while reducing our carbon-footprint!
  • S$500 will be spent on per diems for the creative team – 4 of us will be travelling to Prague for a month to set-up and maintain the exhibition. Your help goes towards a little bit of self care and ensures that we’ll be able to have a nice hot meal together after a long day!

We’re a small collective with a huge opportunity to represent Singapore on the world stage – we’re close to achieving our goals but we need one last little push to get us over the finishing line!

If you’ve attended one of our quirky little shows or perhaps you’re encountering us for the first time and believe in our efforts, please make a donation! Every tiny bit helps – we’ve even lined up a few rewards below as an added incentive!

Thanks for reading!

Much love,

Lemon & Koko from Secretive Thing

About our Curated Artists & their Work

1) Pandemic Traces by Tactility Studies

A Series of Performances that guides audiences through an exploratory journey into their surroundings. Pandemic Traces will be exhibiting research, tactile artifacts and videos showcasing the work presented during the pandemic. Their exploration into the transgressive nature of touch was challenged during the pandemic and as they digitised their performance, the collective explored the various calluses and soft traces experienced through the pandemic.

2) WINDOW by ATTEMPTS X The Doodle People

A work on mental health that took place in a virtually built space. It explores the fracturing and stress which many underwent especially during the pandemic. The performance used a completely new digital platform designed from the group up, and guided audiences through a series of portals using animal avatars as digital guides through the multiverse.

3) re:walk Telok Ayer by DOIT.SG X Secretive Thing

An audio visual experience that explored stories and space through the heritage district of Telok Ayer. This walk brought audiences through a series of stories by arts practitioners that responded to the site during a period of time when touring and traveling were still limited. Melding tour and art together it brought artists through tablets to the audiences in an intimate private tour of a historic site in Singapore.

4) Pok! by Soultari Amin Farid

Amidst the fluid swinging of arms, careful lifting of feet, intricate articulation of fingers, and subtle swaying of hips, male and female Malay dancers are bashful in the lenggang as they contain their excitement of meeting a potential life partner. In Pok!, Amin performs this courtship dance alone, removing the need to embody the gender expectations placed upon him. To find his own lenggang, he first has to confront bapok both as a derogatory word and a term of endearment for an effeminate Malay man.

Who are Secretive Thing?

Secretive Thing is a Singaporean arts collective that creates live audience-centered experiences. We transform everyday spaces - from hotel rooms, to warehouses, art centres and even the beach, and design experiences that enable our audiences to challenge the politics of space and our world.

Established in 2017, Secretive Thing has grown from self-funded shows, to being a part of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (2021) and producing work funded by the National Arts Council and Singapore Tourism Board.
