We are closer than ever! ... but we are stopped at the finish line. Help us to cross it!
We are an elementary school in Kenya, to be precise, we are on a tiny island, so small, you might not even heard of it. We are Rusinga, on the very far west of Kenya.
Back to our school, our school was closed down by the government for not reaching the standard, what we did not have were:
+ windows (what we had was a 'house' with 4 tin walls, thus very poorly ventilated)
+ cement floor (yep, it was a house sitting on top of soil, so when it does rain, tho not frequently, our 'floor' turns into slippery mud)
+ tables and chairs (imagine sitting on a piece of plastic tarp when it rains)
+ uniforms
But hey! Don't get despair yet, we have came a loooong way! Here is a timeline of what we have achieved with the help from people all around the world!
+ Oct 2016 : Our school director got a loan from the bank to start the construction of the roof.
+ Dec 2016 : A volunteer fund-raised $3000 to complete the doors, windows and the cement floor.
+ Feb 2016 : We raised another $750 on GoFundMe, and we used that money on tables, chairs, and teaching materials.
+ March 2016 : Bad news, we got closed down, because... we don't have toilets! And according to the government, this failed to fulfill the hygienic requirements.
So here we are, we have a school, but we are not allowed to operate just because we don't have toilets, it is just... sad. All these kids are so desperate for education, this is something that could literally change their lives. Elementary school might not be much when it comes to knowledge, but it is more than that. It gives children moral values, it shapes characters, and these are important factors that change one's future.
This is a country that not only suffers from famine, drought, and poverty, it is a nation that is still trying to recover from what was once rampant AIDS. Teaching the right attitude of life, basic health do and don'ts, even western stereotypes, are crucial to these kids.
We need your help. A day we don't get the toilet done, it's another day the children go without education.
Also! Your money is safe with us! I constantly update my Facebook page (search ‘Sam Mwalimu', feel free to add me up!) , you can see your money put to good use.
